so why does the radio say that there are flights (west?) from "Shetlands and Orkneys" (Beeb4)

 

They are probably going by the NATS Website :

 

There may be limited opportunity in Orkney and Shetland from 1900 (local time) today for some flights to operate under individual coordination with ATC. However, it is most unlikely that many flights will operate today and anyone hoping to travel should contact their airline before travelling to the airport.

 

Bad reporting really, as they should be going by the operators more regular updates.

^^ I would think any rig that was due a crew change Thursday/Friday is experiencing a noticable level of cabin fever among one or two by now. I can't blame them, marooned on a steel skerry is probably fine and well for a bit, but without a definite rescue date a form of claustrophobia is bound to start setting in.
