Michael
Given that several then cabinet ministers spoke out against forming an alliance with lib dems, Labour wasn't really an option. If you wanted a labour lib dem alliance? Blame labourDidn't want a Conservative government? Blame those who voted for them Didn't want the Tory manifesto enacted? Me neither, and thank the lib dems that there are major concessions
skaterboy
God, some people have the memory of midgies. The bankers crashed the economy, not Joe Bloggs next door. And some have the wit of midgies, the economy collapsed because idiots borrowed money they couldn't pay back, and ocean finance and the like were only possible under legal loansharking rules brought in by GB. Longdog
Probably the best thing that could happen for the labour party, they needed a good kick up the backside, may be now labour will return to actually being labour. When the next election comes they will hopefully be in a strong position again. I can only think the coalition has peeved off many lib dems and also tories voters, never mind MPs and will leave both parties in a weaker position come 5 years time where the options will be vote labour or a still un-known quantity, as the neither con or dem will be in a position to say what they individually have done to improve things, assuming that they have.... Marooned in Maywick
Seems to be an awful lot of knee-jerkery going around. I'm gonna give 'em a chance and then see if they make a decent go of it. Coalising with the Tories wouldn't have been my number 1 choice but there's a chance it'll be stabler than with Labour. shetlandpeat
Well it seems that there is not too much we can do now, with fixed term parliaments and moving the no confidence goal poasts, then adding another set of goalposts. Are they worried about something? If there is a national crisis what happens then, do we drop it for an election? If there is a call for no confidence, and 54.9% vote for it, it means that they can just form a new administration within the same framework. To someone who can add up, it means that less can keep a government going than want a change. On the face of it it seems that there is a little bit of protection going on in this new style of government (to most of us). But yes, we have to let them run with. Your more likley to trip when running, it will show haw the two parties are focused in this 3 legged administration. How does the fixed term work in Scotland? Michael
In Scotland, 2/3 of msps need to vote in favour of dissolution of parliament. No confidence would remain exactly the same as the current system, just at the moment only the prime minister can dissolve parliament. This way, the house of commons gets that power, but with a safeguard to make sure government doesn't just dissolve it to get a majority if the polls are looking good. shetlandpeat
No new government cannot start without the Royal Seal. Jack straw handed it back on wednesday. The seal allows you to represent the Queen and country. What would happen if he ran off with it?
