On the understanding that it's ok to sit in the public area of the court while it's in session.. I'm presuming it's ok to discuss in an open forum (unless there's a trial continuing).

So, Does anyone know what Nigel Timberlake was up in court on Wednesday for?

A LERWICK businessman faces a trial next month after denying he was involved in the theft of scrap metal in the town during the summer.

Nigel Timberlake, aged 50, of 9 Queens Lane, has pled not guilty to two charges of stealing a quantity of aluminium and copper from the Co-op supermarket on 2 June and again from 60Ëš North Recycling at Gremista.

A trial has been set for 15 December at Lerwick Sheriff Court.

Is there any other website that have more up-to-date information on daily business in Scottish sheriff courts? Specifically, 7/2/12.. The official web page hasn't been updated.

Simple answer is no.

The court listings will only be updated on the day, as things can easily change.

If you are that nosy and have nothing better to do with your time, why don't you head up to the court and get a front row seat?!!

Taken from 'Grit on the road' thread

Well I heard a tale today that one of the local constabularies estate cars ended up on its roof somewhere in Shetland over the last week.

Think it was meant to be the day of the bad hail. Anyone know of any truth in it?

If you are that nosy and have nothing better to do with your time, why don't you head up to the police station and ask?!!

Not quite the police station but I asked an officer and got told the story. The next day it appeared in the press. Thank-you very much.

Why is that someone under apprehension has to be escorted all the way from the UK Mainland to appear in court in Lerwick..

Surely with modern technology the hearing could be held "down the road" thus saving hundreds of pounds .

This would also have prevented G4S also having to appear in court, more unnecessary expense.

Think the Chancellor should have a word with the Sheriff. :ponders:

nope by law they need to be there. i know our son would take a week or more to calm down afterwards. they would keep him over night at Grampian. then try to make the first flight from aberdeen. it was often after midnight before they returned. its really not fare to blame the escorts for difficulty over seats. it requires 3 seats per prisoner. its known the sheriff is very Grumpy when delayed.

Surely folk on remand could be held in Shetland. I have a hard time swallowing that its providing VFM dragging them back and forth, some from as far south through Scotland as you can get, and paying Flybe rates to do so.

Its not many years ago that the Police Station underwent a significant refurb, a small extension to the cells to serve as remand ones surely wouldn't have cost all that much added to the contract.

you could not really do it. you would require 4 different sections. men/ women and same for under 21s. you cant just lock a person in a cell for 24 hours. so communal zones. each section would need to be permanently staffed by permanent prison officers. as some folks are on remand for upto a year it really is cheaper and better for them to be south.

^....and LK Court isn't being billed/having their budget proportionately reduced to cover the cost of providing those facilities and services when they make use of them elsewhere?

The point I'm making is, right now the Court Service is paying for them wherever they're provided, plus having to pay Flybe fares and escorts time. Maybe providing a dedicated facility locally would work out more expensive to run per user, compared to nationally due to low numbers, but when you factor in the additional travel costs, its difficult to see it not at least being a break even situation. Thirty and more years ago when the number of folk remanded in a year seldom reached double figures it made sense to do as we are, but now there's barely a week there isn't two or three being shipped back and forth. Its a whole other numbers game.

A local remand facility could probably be made more financially attractive still if it was also a full blown prison as well, so that the costs were spread wider. It would certainly be a whole lot fairer of families/friends wanting to visit someone in the jug and all, and would go some way towards countering the "they came out worse than they went in due to the influences they met" type agruments.
