JustMe
Heard on the radio tonight that the Sheriff is considering holding Reliance in contempt of court because they failed (due to weather related flight delays) to produce a prisoner in court at the specified time.......well not on the specified day. I want to ask if that Sheriff is being a pompus ass expecting the mist to lift for his court. Seem to remember a King.......outranks a Sheriff does a king.....had some notion that he could command the sea. Did not work for Canute so will it work for Sheriff xxxxx. BigMouth
You'll end up with the maximum sentence next time that you're in the court JustMe
turrifield
Canute didn't think he could comand the sea he did it to proove to his court that he was not omnipotent ie to proove that he counldn't comand the sea. But if the sheriff thinks he's above the weather he should know better especially in Shetland.

penfold
Da sheriff isna dat bright is he if he locks da reliance folk up dan wha's gyan to tak da prisoners back an fore fae da clink, you canna let da police tak dem wi day way dey drive, cos dan da prisoners wid be suing dem left right an centre for whiplash and stress after crashing seriously though it would save an absolute fortune in airfares if the prisoners were kept on remand in aberdeen and the trial was done over a video link, and if the prisoner gets jail dan he bides whaur he is and if he get released dan slip him oot o craiginches and let him fin his ain wye hame, keepin da cost doon to joe public a win win situation. junior
This wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. The majority of the sheriffs comments that make the Times are nothing more than petty insults towards folk. He's never seemed like the brightest chap. Ghostrider
He does seem to have been being a bit optimistic at best.... http://www.shetland-news.co.uk/pages/news%20stories/09_2006/prison_escorts_may_face_charges.htm Reliance had guys there to collect in plenty of time, but the prison weren't ready which caused them to miss the first flight, then Loganair couldn't/wouldn't find them room on the next two flights. Why does he think Reliance should have automatically gone straight to the boat the night before, when they had contingency plans to have replacement escorts available in the morning when they were supposed ot be, and able to catch their intended plane, which they most likely would have had the prison been ready. The prison is responisble for this guy's non-appearance, not Reliance, as far as I can see.
Tom
I love the continual comments quoted in the ST about 'This fine should be a warning to boy racers that their behaviour will not be tolerated' Over and over and over again... Muppet
The Reliance guy couldn't make it. He was fogbound in Aberdeen

JustMe
Seems to me that this must have happened when the police were responsible for escorting prisoners........have they ever been threatened with being held in contempt of court?. Have British Airways and their associates been threatened for refusing to fly when the weather is too bad?. P&O, Northlink etc for refusing to sail?. Lovely little idea in my mind.....if this Sheriff fails to reach the court due to bad weather could anyone due to appear charge the Sheriff with contempt for not arriving?. Distortio
the sheriff should be charged with contempt of reality. is he just sitting in his courtroom charging anything that pops into his mind? "the curtains are flapping: THE WIND WILL HEREBY BE HELD IN CONTEMPT OF COURT!" "my wig's on squint: MY HEAD WILL BE HELD IN CONTEMPT OF COURT!""my hammer's too loud: CONTEMPT OF COURT!" "i don't like frosties: TONY THE TIGER WILL BE HELD..." silly old barm box. i suppose a sheriff's daily life consists of little more than dressing up and attributing laws to things, maybe he just needs to get out more. Packing a clean pair of knickers or pissing around to make everyone's lives misery as usual. F
Ghostrider
All this begs the question, is it not time to revist the vexed question of the provision of remand cells in Shetland? Not very many years ago the number of remand prisoners produced by our court was barely a trickle, it was a rarity, and very obviously a waste of resources to expend on such a faciity locally. Over the last 10 -15 years that number, or so it seems to me, has steadily increased, and shows little signs of slowing. How many cases have been remanded to Craiginches or wherever per year from 2000 to 2005 inclusive? How many were similiarly remanded in the years 1980 to 1985? My money is on two very different numbers. Does the argument of economics hold any water any longer?
