  1. Swedish whitebeam, downy birch, japanese larch, common alder, rowan, aspen, black cottonwood, alaskan willow and sycamore surrounded by flowering currant, rosa rugosa, daisy bush and winter berry for shelter. Oak is rather slow growing but I have quite a few dotted among the rest.
  2. Why are the police getting so much stick right now? Who do you call when somebody breaks into your house, your car gets stolen etc etc??
  3. Express by Holiday Inn (Chapel Street) are offering double rooms for £49.00 with breakfast right now.
  4. Yes, they have been in some financial difficulties for some time according to rumour which can have little to do with this plannign application being turned down. There are plenty of areas throughout Shetland with outline planning permission where they could build but as stated previously this is pure speculation which the plannign department recognized....
  5. The number of 300 on a waiting list actually applied to the whole of Shetland, not just to Scalloway. This application is speculation which was recognized by the Planning Department and as another application had already been refused of a similar nature not long before ina nearby location, it was apparently decided to defer this for further information. There is an area around Port Arthur already set aside for building making this application uneccesary at this time. More infill could be made in the East Voe site where there is already a large area of development. This development was/is not in keeping with the housing in Scalloway - although to be fair - it is at quite a distance from eveything else. The developers were not prepared to put in the required road infastructure unless they could have full permission to develop the whole croft - over a100 houses, alleged Health Centre (although NHS have never approved this) and a business park.

  14. The current Voe kirk was built in the Fifties after fundraising was first begun by Ken Bryant an American missionary raffled his camera to set the ball rolling. The previous kirk was unsafe and had to be dismantled, I believe.
  15. We had a complete kitchen delivered free of charge from Hombase......
  16. I agree with Piggie Wiggie - Cornwall is great and they speak the same language. there are plenty of beaches if the weather is fine and loads of sites to visit - Flambards, Lappa Valley Railway, Poldark Mine etc etc - if it's not. We found Bulgaria to be horrible, dangerous and the food was awful but maybe we were unlucky. Also it wasn't as cheap as we had been led to believe. I'd never go there again. the Center Parcs idea is good too and your ten year old would probably meet like minded people.
  17. I entirely sympathize here. Although I do feel that Sumburgh is one of the worst, we had to help a mother and baby in Edinburgh when she had to take off boots, belt, coat, have her bag searched, test the baby's food etc etc and there was nowhere to put the baby except on the floor where she might have been stood on by other harassaed passengers. I also understand regulations but if they are in place, some measure of competent help/place of safety for baby should be available. Some understaning and sympathy would be useful too - not to be told that you are taking too much food for your child. All they offer on board is tea, coffee and disgusting sticky buns, after all.
  18. Go. We should never have jpined in the first place and probably wouldn't have if more people had actually voted in the referendum....
  19. Very tempting. Had to put it in clear plastic bag and carry it with wriggling baby, hand luggage etc. It spilled and made a mess but he ate what wwas left as there was no alternative.
  20. Yes, in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, London etc although Sumburgh is the worst. We now try to travel with sandwiches, fruit (bananas etc) to avoid the hassle from staff. In the past, we have had to open yoghurts and taste them at security - then how do you transport an opened pot of yoghurt? Also had to taste baby's milk - yuk! International flights are much better as milk, fresh juice, fruit, yoghurts etc are all freely available so there isn't the need to carry so much.
  21. Try the Camera Shop. they usually have videos of dancing at the Clickimin during folk festival/accorian festival.
  22. £350 seems a bit steep. I have never found them to be that expensive. Does this include the cooker itself?
