  1. I'm not aware of any care homes in Cunningsburgh or Sandwick, I think Overtonlea, Lerwick is the only one to the South end? please correct me if I'm wrong. To get a sheltered house, you do not have to be retired, but you do have to have a need for that type of supported accomodation.
  2. Excellent gig! Just read the Times review - was he at the same hall as I was? Only downer was before we got to W/W hall: I wonder who was driving the band around before the 2nd gig? They pulled out of the Westings junction without looking! I was driving along in the p*ssing rain, luckily going slow because of the weather and managed to brake in time.
  3. Anyone use a Virgin.net email address? I've lost the contents of my inbox and the online help is being of no help what so ever. I lost my emails on 28/7/07. Anyone else had problems with Virgin email? I've just nearly lost my temper with the on line help!
  4. Googled it and came up with "A Project for young people at risk of exculsion". http://www.shetland.gov.uk/coins/commpdfs/Public/7857.pdf. It's the Bridges Project. Nothing to do with Bressay . I have a leaflet lying around somewhere, but canna find it at the moment.
  5. Issue 3 has just dropped through the letter box. Am going to sit down with a cuppa while I read it and try not to laugh/be outraged/angry too much!
  6. The Council cuts council house gardens when they are temporary accomodation, sheltered housing and drying greens when they are shared areas. I think there may be some more, but can't think of them off hand.
  7. That will explain why the lifeboat went racing to the South end at tea time!
  8. http://www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk/ Anyone been to Belladrum?
  9. I regulary gave blood when I lived in Aberdeen. One of the first things I did when I moved back to Shetland was to find out how to give blood here. I was told I coulnd't give blood in Shetland, but was not told why. I do know people who used to be called into the hospital to give blood in an emergency, I think they no longer need to do this as blood can be brought from south quickly and there is some stored here for emergency use.
  10. Hi, I can't seem to see the last 20 post box at the RHS of my screen anymore. Any suggestions as to how to fix it? Or has the box gone for good?
  11. Is abody having a good festival? Highlight for me has to be Terrafolk at the Legion last night! Brilliant!

There are examples of 'winners' who's hourly rate was going up, but their take home pay was going to be less, as their terms and conditions (overtime/bonus) would have changed. Some 'winners' have partners/members of their household who are 'losers', so overall the money coming into the home would have been considerably less. There are also those who just do not agree with the SS process as it stands at present. I here that the TU&GW Union are not going to go to a ballot. Their ballot may have had a different outcome, as I think there members are mostly manual workers. Unison has a high percentage of APT & C staff (office workers).

Result from Unison ballot: 926 ballot papers went out, and 687 were returned: a return of 74%. Of the 687 no fewer than 640 members voted to REJECT (93%) 44 voted to ACCEPT (6.5%). 3 papers were spoiled. Great news, with a strong show of support against SS.
  14. http://www.shetland.gov.uk/elections/Elections2007.asp Info on this years elections. I've not read it yet, so unsure if it explains this years new voting system.
  15. We drove past it today. Hubby thought there was missile launchers under the plastic covers (but I'm not sure if he was winding me up!). We thought it might be Scandanavian?
  16. Putting a request for information in using The Freedom of Information Act is a fairly easy process. The request must be in a recordable format and I think there is a £10 charge. However some information can't be given out due to Data Protection. Eg it may identify the 3rd party, and here in Shetland there a good chance it does. http://www.shetland.gov.uk/housing/documents/AllocationPolicy2.pdf Just found the SIC allocation policy on the internet! I'm sure there is info on allocations as well on the SIC website, but I don't have time this morning to have a good hunt! Might try later and see if I can find info for you, Willies_landy.
  17. There are some very interesting comments on this topic. The Housing Service's allocation policy is written using The Housing (Scotland) Act 2001 and homeless legisaltion. There is very strict legisaltion covering social rented housing (that is Hjaltland & SIC). The policy is then presented to SIC councillors and the Shetland Tenants forum for comment and agreement. The Allocation policy is available to the public, if anyone is interested, Housing should be able to provide a copy. Unforuntunalty the Act is generic, in that it is written for the whole of Scotland, covering rural and urban areas. Re people coming off the boat and getting a house, there are a number of people who are sent back south again that night, simply because they are not classed as homeless under homeless legisaltion. Everyone who presents to the Housing Service as homeless, has their homelessness investigated. If this takes longer than a day, (and in many cases it can) Housing offer that person somewhere to stay while their homelessness is being investigated. Likewise someone from Shetland can go anywhere in Scotland and present as homeless and the same process should happen there. Social rented housing in Shetland is allocated to those in most need. When you are on that waiting lists, it is so frustrating, you see other people being allocated houses and you can't understand why they would getting a house. The reason someone is allocated is not always obvious. Angel, hang in there, build up a good relationship with your Housing Officer, make sure you have all the points you are intitled to. Tell them as much info as you can.
  18. Not sure if this applies here! This is my most sober UHA in a long time. I should be out there in my posh frock, wi my hair done, dancing wi blokes who are too p*shed to remember who I am! Here's too all the hangovers tomorrow! Just carry on and go to the Hop!
  19. Meant to add some comments about the suit this year. The good old Shetland rumour mill (spit) has been doing the rounds that the skins are from bears, but I hear they are actually from deer instead. I think a better choice than bear. Overall I like the outfit, I'm heard the head gear is heavy, they needed a counter weight in the back? I think the shields look good, the design is simple, yet effective, good use of fire hoses! Not sure about the boots, it is so hard for any squad to get them right, should they have trousers ( last year were very cosy!), or go bare legged? If you go bare legged you don't want to end up looking as if you are wearing uggs!. The blue is a good contrast against the cold january skys! What did you think of the all colour programme? The page titled 'Members of the Guizer Jarl's squad 2007' - did it look superimposed to anyone else? Great to see the whole programme in colour!
  20. Quote fae Ally 'Grip his pilly!' (I'm no quite gotten to grips wi how to quote folk!) Must be a bloke thing about UHA. I even heard elderly members of my family quoting 'grip his pilly' at the procession tonight. They were not in the procession and where there without drams. This is the first procession I have seen since I was approx 15yrs old, where I have not been rushing to get to a hall for 8.45. I had the chance to watch the whole procession and go into park afterwards to watch the galley burn, I have to say I really enjoyed the whole thing. My better half was is in jarl squad last year, and while it was a busy and enjoyable year, I felt like I needed a year off - and I'm only the wife!

chop haggis up, put in covered dish in microwave for 7 mins (stir well half way through). Yum. Most haggis have microwave cooking instructions on label. Enjoy!

  23. I think me n crofter has had a similar thing happenin. Can anyone explain?
  24. oohhh, good q's from pooks. I'm half n half, when it came to answering the q's. Only problem was re Q no 9: quote fae pooks: Which eye was open when the fingertip remained in line with the small object? I'm very short sighted,so it appeared to me that the object moved from left to right depending on what I eye I had open. So neither remained any where near in line to my forefinger. Let's hope da neighbours wirna lookin in da window at me squintin oot to try out question 9 - would have looked a bit weird!
