  1. Garriocks always worth a try for diy stuff they are keeping quite a lot and even more if you ask, tools are competitive price also think alot of ppl forget about them.
  2. i can honestly say i never saw any place names norweigen or not (as i can understand alot of it lol) even had the bosun telling us where the ship was in a fjord where a large part of it is falling away (one hell of a wave will come from thisn when it goes, name evades me tho) did it not get a record for longest continous tv show? 5.5 days? i think there would be an uproar in the uk if bbc1 was to show a ship sailing round the uk for 5 days!! but i aggree it mite be more interesting that the rubbish that is on!
  3. this is a wee bit of the topic but as last post was about a tv lol just bought a new one from the electrical shop (not hydro) and 46" sony 3d tv for a very very good price!! even did the cheeky thing of getting model numbers etc from them and checking online prices (and reviews) and they were cheapest in UK as they actually told me this was very true!!!! and i got 3d stuff for free!! because of this i will most likely buy my new kettle and toster from them so well done!! sometimes the local guys do well and it was delivered in a week!! i was surprised!
  4. mabye its just me lol having sailed into norways fjords, ports etc ive seen enough haha! its still a good idea but some place names would be nice on the tv i didnt see any but then i didnt watch any great length. nice to see how many small boats norweigns have!! they were everywhere!
  5. Yep Shetland Powder Coating get a thumbs up from me as well! very good job has done 2 sets for me and 2nd set was absolutly faultless lots of colour choice also
  6. must admit there was a bit of music when i flicked past, its a shame they dont tell you about the places etc, its been showing on norweigen tv and the norweigens here dont even wanna watch it tho lol
  7. if this is such a money maker for shetland why isnt there competition to put money into it? i would have thought local businessmen, banks etc would be champing at the bit to invest in such a great thing?? say alot that you go cap in hand to a wealthy but not a great investing council!
  8. i can say this is very boring for five and a half days!! as nice as norway is they could have added some commentary or music! its showing on the Norwegian tv we get on the ship, longest broadcast i belive
  9. iam very keen to see if this "lifebelt" will manage to float mareel, clickimin, other centres, ferrys. or shall we just put it in the white elephant pen with the rest! but really regadless of whether its gonna make any money or not surly they could have made the design a bit more pleasing!! id rather look at the malakoff (at least there is some history with this building) would have thought they might have continued the museam theme as mareel is ment to be a shetland music centre (promoting local music etc is the main aim!!!) this must have something in common with the musem. but alas no one will be accountable as per usal!
  10. So i see the Mareel has had its late licence knocked back wonderful lets hit one of the only areas where this venue might actually make some money!! Our Council belive they can stop people drinking more oh how wrong they are!! Whilst i was never a supporter of the Mareel (even less know after seeing what a flaming eyesore it is esp from the sea!!) it was just too much public money at a time when we knew we would struggle (mabye some supporters who have now had there childs school closed can see that now) and yes yes i know differnt budgets but as this is educational as well.... well nevermind. i will however use the cinema and bar, something else to do from a private point of view is no bad thing in lerwick. so what do we think of the licence laws? cant see them getting a 2am licence every few weeks for a gig! bit useless for somewhere that wants to host club djs, bands etc who are more used with ibiza, london, even aberdeen.
  11. I used Paul Rutherford also very recently and couldnt fault him at all, dealt with Richard Donaldson and paul and found them both spot on. i considered using online but decided such a big thing that least i could have someone to go to see face to face should things go sour! i was warned to avoid a certain place in lerwick due to being slow!
  12. you will find a lot of the tourists are just as interested in the scottish as well as shetland tradition!! im sure they can cope with bagpipes and the fiddle!! and differentiate between!! the more there is the better!
  13. At the end of the day we are scottish!! and you should be proud of that!! whilst im not really into the bagpipes, scottish stuff etc just think of the stuff you watch and buy when u go abroad! many countries hate there sterotypes (even if they are selling the tat) its just tourists, be happy for the revenue and stop complaining!!!!! some music is better than nothing!! cant say i would listen to the music that comes fae high level most days but it does brighten up the street on a grey day and makes it even better on a sunny one so fair play to anyone that is at least trying!! its easy to sit at home and complain! pick up a fiddle and gie us a tune!!
  14. really ive no idea if discoveries are ahead of production, (i work in it im not spending my free time reading about it ) plus you should take whatever you read with a pinch of salt! if i was to belive the shetland times in the 80s then SVT would be mothballed by now no?? iam only saying what i know working for one of the biggest geophysical companys in world both land and marine, and the places we are working. my original argument was that the price difference between shetland and mainland isnt the real problem its the overall world price of something which isnt the true cost of extraction/refining its being manipulated this should be made illegal otherwise where will it end?
  15. Agreed, also think the Classifieds are cracking, well overtaken the paper me reckons
  16. excatly what i ment, its not gonna run out in near future, no one knows if we have used half of whats available, not all of the seabed has been mapped yet! working on a siesmic survey vessel i can assure you that i know!! not even all of north sea has been mapped far from it!! yes the cost is massive! we have data onboard now worth millons and this job has taken 4 weeks! and its actually millons! we dont even know if theres oil here yet! Peak Oil!? me and you will never see peak oil! or at least we wont know because by the time the whole world has been mapped and someone says thats it no more oil left ill be long gone! mabye it will just be extracted at slower rates to keep prices high! its not unknown to have tankers sat at a platform for 3 weeks trickle loading to keep the cost high! instead of flooding the markets. and half of available oil well half of what was available in 70s is diff to whats available now with new tecnology more is available! its changing all the time and very fast.
  17. what i ment was the cost of fuel to the public, it didnt rise by 1p every week for last 30yrs!! speculators are def the problem! we are not running out of fuel thats a huge myth, mabye the north sea is in decline but brazil, africa, asia all booming because of the technology to explore deep water. do you think a 10% tax rise on oil company will help fuel price!! oil company will just put on price of product! again public lose! the global cost of fuel is the problem not the differnce between shetland and aberdeen! we always paid more and always will thats life!
  18. the rising cost of fuel will break this country, but i suspect not until we see £2.00 a ltr so i reckon by october. eventually somthing has to give! haulage will be the first, or at least cost of living will rise so much, making the whole population poorer, cost of fuel dosent only affect those who drive anymore, wait till the cost of the boat tickets double..... and why not if fuel doubles in price then its only fair.... working in the oil industry right now is def not a boom time!! but oil companies will make profit... if they didnt we would have no fuel and to be honest they stake alot of money out to start with having stupid, uneducated (in the right areas) working for our country is whats causing all this, how come fuel price stayed so stable for 20yrs then went nuts! the ppl that are causing that need to be locked up!
  19. its true with a DP3 vessel the reduncy in place is kinda virtually impossible to have a problem that would cause this, but unlikely that while going through harbour they were in DP mode, prob had split busbars with 2 gennys online. but these are so advanced that a electrical bug can cause havoc! esp with steering and thrusters (first hand experience) or it could be that some incompetant fool was on the sticks which to be honest is just a likely!! see if the real reason makes the papers if not there will be an experince transfer doing the rounds sometime for those of us in the industry.
  20. yep i spoke to the actual agent in charge of moving them and restrictions are from the council! they think its crazy they are moving x number of 45ton trucks with stone from the lerwick quarry per day, but they wont move the trailers. this job would have gone to a local haulage firm too! also they will also lose harbour dues for the fright ship as it wont be tied up it will be north! was told its costing a lot more doing it this way too!!
  21. Yep, i also went from Gott primary (as it was known) to the Anderson in 1st year and i think one of the best things my parents did. i made friends i kept all the way through, good a good education, now have a very good job. dont really see the problem with the education aspect, ive no doubt scalloway is a good school but so is the anderson. ok the building is not fit for purpose but thats affecting everyone. i can think of nothing worse than spending 4 yrs at scalloway learning the school, teachers etc then because you want to learn more you should transfer schools at the most critical time in your life going on to highers! have to learn new school, teachers and inevitablly make new friends etc but thats just my two pennith!!
  22. anglo eastern group always worth a try as well, i get a lot of offers for dayrating with them as 3rd and as i have my 2nds ticket as well. good luck its slow for 4ths and 3rds

    NHS

i find the OP description very hard to belive , i know a great deal of nurses in GB and whilst mabye not all in wards, i cannot imagine they would just watch someone sit in there own mess while drinking tea! as for going into A&E and being made to wait, alot of ppl in shetland think that A&E is an alternative to the doctor this is not the case and treating ppl with the flu etc is just rubbish and happens daily! you also dont know whats going on in the hospital. Nurses really do a crappy job for crappy money!! and should be nothing but commended for what they do and have to put up with!! would u like to go to work and be spat at by a patient, or verbally abused and told by the patient that he knows your son or daughter and will hurt them? all this happens in presence of police in the GB and yet they dont do anything. but if nurses didnt do it where would we be?? they are more valuable than you think considering what they do now, shetland is a training hospital so most doctors are very new (not that they are not good) so the nurses can have added work helping them.
