  1. Shetland fencing club: http://www.shetlandfencingclub.co.uk Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings at Clickimin. Not much better than fencing for that. Remarkably, the Shetland club is one of the best in Scotland, with Andy being one of the national coaches, regularly turning out Commonwealth team members and medalists..
  2. Incredible. New world record by the Copious beats previous one by the Copious.
  3. That works, but it isn't a good idea. Sterilised DIY is perfectly fine, but don't use a needle, use a piercing stud. If you use a needle then you get a hole, but then you need to get a stud through. It goes in through the hole in the first layer of skin easily, but finding the exit hole can be tricky, and for "tricky" read unpleasant. On the other hand, using a sterilised piercing stud is a doddle.
  4. Surely you will be attending the Cerys Matthews event?
  5. Actually Lerwick town is just Lerwick. Its name stems from the geographical watery location at the foot of Mounthooly Street, the so-called muddy bay. That wick would have originally been Leirvik (or something similarly Norsky), but the town came so much later it seems to have always been Lerwick. Nice Hollywood parody pic . When I had the Cleeves TV drama filming at the house, I thought the zone had become Loddywood.
  6. Hmmm. That actually sounds to me like a pretty good description of religions generally.
  7. I would certainly be interested in that. I love welding, but am sharn at it. I've also never tried TIG. I wonder what the minimum number required is for an evening class to be organised?
  8. I think you do, because you've noted the reality concerning the fact that Hillswick does not host Shetland's main airport. It is not a matter of Hillswick being discriminated against, rather it is a situation where the South Mainland residents are fortunate to be able to avail themselves of the extra runs necessary for servicing the major transport hub. Would you greet less about fairness if non-airport passengers were barred? That might perhaps seem fairer to you, but hardly a sensible option.
  9. Blender is certainly a most admirable 3D modeller, but it is probably not the best choice for someone starting out in 3D. In terms of ease of use, and simple learning curve, SketchUp is hard to top. It was until recently Google SketchUp and available in both free and Pro versions. Its development has now been taken over by Trimble with the same versions. Where the free version of SketchUp will become lacking for users is in the area of file import and export. At that time migrating to Blender will be appropriate. http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/product/gsu.html
  10. Yep. It began last June: This has been the case for ages. See bottom of this page for info about it, and how to work around the problem: http://www.shetlink.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3181&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=150 Obviously the best solution would be to contact Google and get the site off the blacklist so the functionality is restored, but failing that, as I suggested last year: There was no response to that, even though it would be a trivial edit to the phpBB template.
  11. I'm gobsmacked to read this from you. Kettle, pot...
  12. That one was attached by a youngish male who was accompanied by a female. The sticker was taken from their rucksack. I didn't see them myself but it happened a few years ago while a visitor was waiting for me to come to my door. The couple apparently looked unfamiliar, perhaps toories.
  13. Shetland Museum Sixareen
  14. How dull of them. Still, there seems to be no end of alternative footage of the device. Try this one perhaps:
  15. Remember the old book 101 Uses for a Dead Cat?
  16. It is a long day, so two priorities have to be: keeping the weight of the suit and "accessories" down, and having comfortable footware.
  17. The LHD rope/wire dept. Not the Albert Building shop, but the buildings at Holmsgarth: http://www.lhdmarinesupplies.co.uk/NETANDWIRESTORE.aspx
  18. Yes indeed. The bit I find curious about the list is having them both listed, as (presumably) the Tojo deaths would be included within the Emperor's tally.
  19. I can't help wondering how Tojo and Hirohito are both listed in your list, but with different values. Why do you believe the Emperor was culpable for two million more than Tojo?
  20. I'm a toonie so a bit distanced from the rural beach scene, but my understanding is that what grumbling exists is mainly concerned with the use of laid up wood for bonfires, rather than people taking items home.
  21. Hmmmm. I think you are perhaps forgetting that such action is theft. Scotland's "right to roam" is a highly laudable principle, but it is not a right to thieve. In the case of firewood, it is generally a sound idea to leave it at the head of the banks to dry out a bit and get less slestery.
  22. That is the whole point. Stuff which is there is likely to have been moved there, hence the OP's comment. In practical terms the high water mark isn't as relevant as the banks broo. At one time this was pretty basic stuff locally, but times have changed and toories certainly don't seem to have much experience of such matters.
  23. Whatever the dynamic benefits, I do find them aesthetically excellent. It is almost a steam-punk look, combining the modern with the reverse stemmed pre-dreadnought.
