penfold
I just read the post from the shetlandbairn and realised that we have had another opinion from EistnWasts "golden generation", sadly one that is currently living off the Isle, if your hame next summer shetlandbairn would you be willing to play B's for us? EISTnWAST
I just read the post from the shetlandbairn and realised that we have had another opinion from EistnWasts "golden generation", sadly one that is currently living off the Isle, if your hame next summer shetlandbairn would you be willing to play B's for us? "Golden Generation" and B's in the same conversation is like....... (deep breath) (deep breath) (count to 10)We need a public apology here penfold. I can see a new poll being created. Something like should penfold be banned from any involvement with Ness, or banished from the south mainland? Part of the reason he will be playing A's follows. I'm afraid shetlandbairn hasn't actually taken his place in the SLHF yet, therefore his profile has not been completed. But the SLHF do have the foresight to keep information on most players in our data base. shetlandbairn was one of the late developers of the much talked about "Golden Generation". He began his early years as a promising goalkeeper, and was the envy of many clubs during 5 a-side competitions. But being vertically challenged, it was always going to be difficult for him to win major honours in this position. While many may have touted him as a possible fullback, it was at sweeper where he found his niche. He quickly became one of the first names on his managers' team sheets, and the scourge of opposition attackers. Some described him as "better than Alan Hansen", but more appropriate quotes from people talking about him are, "a rock", and "like he's 10 foot tall".© Southern League Hall of FameFurther player profiles available on request. So any plans on taking your place back in the A's shetlandbairn?
shetlandbairn
Well, thanks for the kind words EISTnWAST but I think Penfold is closer to the mark with wondering if I would play for the B's (count me in if I'm back next summer). Having watched a couple of games over the previous two seasons, I think Ness A's are well set in the sweeper position anyway... just one of a number of the younger players that have come on a lot over the last couple of years. Hopefully the curse of the Ness Knee doesn't hit any of them!
Baxter
Sorry al no pretend i understand da situation but do ness no have the numbers to sport an A and a B team. This could be a good option for them. But again i really have no ideas as to squad depth however u seeem o be suggesting that a southern league could still happen, is that still posiible?? penfold
yeah we'll give you a shout then shetlanbairn, I was actually going to give a example of his sweeping abilities EistnWast but I'm enjoying d player profile's dat much that I thought I'd leave da door open tae you Ah yes the dreaded Ness Knee and the local doctors specialist treatment regime "go home and rest it for a couple of weeks and take a paracetemol"
dB
Ness could do with a physical player like that in the current team. I did say though.......I think if you look further back in history, you can find some better exponents of the man-and-ball tackle. Du's right dB, it's afore my time. I did hear dat Iain Henderson wis also quite fierce in his playing days, but Jackie pit a stop tae him playing, 'cus dir wir alot o injuries gyan aboot at dat time. Ony idder stories du can t'ink o fae afore wis young eens wir aboot wid be muckle apperciated. MiM...... I'm affraid I have to rule you out as well. We're talking about Association football here But anyway, are you confirming that D.Bray played for the real deal Ness team, in the circumstances i mentioned? Du's right dB, it's afore my time. I did hear dat Iain Henderson wis also quite fierce in his playing days, Incorrect IMHO. Strong and fast but I widna have caa'ed him fierce. Stopped playing far too young, for reasons unknown to me. dB
was the answer tae d quiz EistnWast, Ian Manson, Jack Halcrow, and latterly Peter Keenan? If we hae tae go back to da Ian Manson / Jack Halcrow era Cunningsburgh's George Adamson (Pundstow) must be in with a shout. I canna mind when it was, maybe mid 70's, but I seem to remember he scored a screamer in Faroe. Disappointed George seems to be a forgotten man. Certainly one of the best players ever from the Ness. Funny how it seems you just described Alan Henderson!!!It was definitely Jackie that put a stop to Iain playing, and also Leslie Smith (of the famous pund brothers). I think there was one more guy he had working for him that got 'retired' too early. It was basically down to them getting injured, and not being able to work.Joost going on whit I wis telt whan I wis a bairn. Cunningsburgh's George Adamson (Pundstow) must be in with a shout. Indeed. Never a name I've heard mentioned before. But if we can confirm these answers, then he can talk his rightful place in Ness United's history.Just need to confirm, was he definitely playing for Ness at the time? The answer seems to be......The last 3 Ness United players to represent Shetland were, Duncan Bray 2004, Peter Keenan 1995, and George Adamson 197x. EISTnWAST
Any chance of compiling a player profile for George Adamson, so we can get him added to the Southern League Hall of Fame? I'm afraid he has eluded our vast data base Must have been when the system crashed, and wiped out most of the profiles for players pre 1980's
glenn
Pretty sure Peter Keenan played in 1998. Shetland won 3-2 and Keenan scored the second with an over head kick.
penfold
just post a list of the players du still needs EistnWast and im sure your avid readers will oblige you with all the facts required some of it might no be printable though. BALLACK
]© Southern League Hall of FameFurther player profiles available on request. I would have to pick Mongoose. Mongoose has to be in the hall of fame. If he's not then i will be very upset
penfold
I remember old flea telling mongoose he couldn't "take to the field of play without shinguards" so mongoose darts out the door tae his car and comes back with what seems to be shiguards fitted, only at the end o the game did we realise it was twa readers digests stuck down his socks

I love that Story. Another one was when Cunningsburgh was voting for the player of the year and Mongoose discovered he had dislexia but still managed to scribble down his OWN initials M.A. He always got us a goal in the first 10 minutes. Fair play.
penfold
That he did, made a comeback for Ness last year, but got injured in a game at Whalsay and sadly decided to call time on his career, pity because he would have been an influential player for us.
