  1. AVG has gone from a very, very good free Anti Virus to a horrible mess of bugs and poor interface choices in less than 2 years. These days, I use nothing but the standard Windows tools. Windows Defender (for spyware) is built into Vista and 7 and you can download Security Essentials for Windows XP, Vista or 7 from the Microsoft site. It's one of the least "aggressive" anti virus scanners I've ever used and it's pretty quick too.
  2. I've spent the majority of my life with access to the internet. Without it, I actually feel completely disconnected from the world. I can't talk to friends on Facebook, Twitter, Windows Live Messenger or Google Talk. I can't listen to any music as it all streams from my Spotify account. Video games are basically a no-no because there's no online play, none of your stats are tracked and many games require some sort of online verification these days. Then general tasks can become a little more frustrating when you need some information on something. And then there's needing the internet to do basically every thing at work...
  3. If you're playing it on the 360, I'd highly recommend you install it to the HDD if you have enough space. Apparently this has been helping in some areas not to mention it help cuts down the huge assed loading times.
  4. My connection here in Lerwick was dead from 8pm last night till around 6am this morning. No idea why and PlusNet say it was nothing to do with them... :-/
  5. I'm fairly sure that a lot of American chocolate companies such as Hershey use off milk in their products rather than fresh milk. Giving it a pretty bad taste.
  6. Mirror's Edge is a wonderful idea, very poorly executed. It's a real shame, because that game had some really astounding moments. As for Fallout: New Vegas, I've heard it's got great story and some wonderful characters but has some massively game breaking bugs. Mostly because the Oblivion engine (what Fallout runs on) has more bugs than a bee hive... Oh and I played through Vanquish this weekend. 5 wonderful hours of pure madness
  7. I'm currently playing more than is legal I suspect. Currently making my way through: Sonic 4, Super Meat Boy, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and the pretty generic as hell Medal of Honor. Next week brings far more madness. Rock Band 3 and Fable III. Good job I took a few days off work...
  8. Both of my parents dogs are collie crosses so naturally they want to run towards the nearest piece of wild life and "play" with it. As cruel as it can be sometimes at young age you must be stern with a puppy. The worst thing you can do is praise bad behaviour. Good luck with a Labrador though, I hear they can be a real handful
  9. I was looking at the met office website over the weekend the temperature is due to drop at least 7C this week, it's completely possible that we could get snow. I just don't think we will
  10. Yeah, this seems to be a more modern design for keyboards. The last couple one ones I've had at home have been the same. Rather handy when the worst happens
  11. I only get one - BBC HD. ITV HD isn't available in the north of scotland for some reason. Is there another HD channel for freesat? STV HD still isn't live yet. I'm originally from Yorkshire so I stuck my old postcode in on the setup and got ITV HD (dedicated channel rather than red button doo-dah) There are apparently more coming on next year. Apparently.
  12. Indeed it does. It is a little more expensive to set up than Freeview seeing as you have to have a dish and a specific digibox. Which can be rather expensive box if you want DVR. Oh and you'll lose a couple of channels like Sky three and Dave. But you do gain a few HD channels and seeing as Shetland will probably get fibre broadband before it gets Freeview HD this might be the only free way to get HD for some time.
  13. Has anyone else been having awful, awful ping timings post 6pm? Every night without fail my ping jumps from 30ms during the day to 300-600ms at night. Meaning playing anything online is completely impossible. This has been going on for a couple of weeks and PlusNet have promised me that they're not doing anything. In fact they said they would offer me a refund for the last 3 months if I could prove it was them as they give priority traffic to online games. So, Open Reach being a pile of useless asses again? :-/ I'd be interested to see some other ping timings.
  14. I remember having this problem before the digital switch over. Just as peak times hit the reception made TV watching... unwatchable. My advice? Move over to Freesat.
  15. I'd agree with the whole custom UI stuff. In particular the X10's TimeScape. All it's done is delay updates and nothing else. Not to mention it's a lag-tastic piece of crap... :-/ It has to be said, at the moment Android OS (without sense, which is what most HTC phones are running) is a bit of a mess UI wise. Design for applications is literally all over the place. But the core OS is steady as a rock. I've had my N1 for around 6 months now, never a hiccup, never a crash. Sure, apps crash, but that's the developers fault nothing to do with Android OS. As a platform Android is still growing and it's only been with us for 18 months. Let's see what 3.0 shows at the end of the year. ... Then again I am SUPER tempted by Windows Phone 7! >_>
  16. Our flights will still be Logan Air regardless of who Flybe shack up with so the prices (and tiny awful planes! >_>) will be with us for a while I fear.
  17. The Tornado was a truely brilliant air craft when it was first built in the '70s. But it has no place in modern combat out in the middle east. There's a reason the RAF are probably going to be buying more Typhoons. Be sad to see the Harrier go through, I love vertical take off aircraft
  18. I neither condone or condemn what this guy was proposing. Clearly he's a nut job though. The thing is, if this went ahead... It would be like a terrorist recruitment drive in some middle eastern countries.
  19. I'd be pretty weary of RF amplifiers when it comes to a digital signal. I've not used one yet that was any good as they seem to amplify all the crap along with the signal you actually want. This usually means you'll pick up more channels or same amount to a stronger degree. The flip side is that it usually means the interference you get is much worse. Buy a decent out door aerial if you can and hook it up on the roof or the highest point on a wall facing the transmitter.
  20. I actually think it's pretty damn insane that Shetland doesn't have a single LLU... Or that BT consistently forget we exist and decide not to upgrade our exchange.
  21. It depends what kind of person you are. If you like a piece of technology to just work out of the box with usually very little faff, but enjoy being told how, when and why you can't do certain things an iPhone (or any Apple product) should be right up your street.
  22. I think I'm actually one of the few people who liked the Ribbon that Microsoft introduced into office 2007 (and improved in 2010)... Open Office on the other hand? It drives me insane. Some of the things it does is complete nonsense. Shift + backspace deletes everything in a cell in it's spreadsheeting application. I just want to back space and then have the next character as a capital
  23. I used to live in a shared house in Lerwick and I used to pay an insane amount of money. Then I bought a flat, and now it costs even more money
  24. Can we get a campness filter on Shetlink please? Ha
  25. I can totally see why people play it so much, it is balanced to the point of perfection. Blizzard are renowned for being capable of that. It's weird, I love RTS games, I love sci-fi in other video games but when I'm playing RTS nothing is more fun to me than medieval/American colonisation time periods. Cannons & Muskets = <3 I am super excited about Civ 5 though and I've never even played a 'real' Civ game. Seems totally my thing though.
