  1. Casablanca - excellent - can't believe I have never seen the whole film before. Golden Compass - not a patch on the book - but wasn't expecting it to be. Ok for what it was. Pulp Fiction - Woo hoo!! - fantastic, never seen it on the big screen before. Forgot how good it was, even though I have seen it many times at home. Tried to spot fellow Shetlinkers - couldn't guess who you were. I want to see Blade Runner on Film Wednesdays!
  2. Anyone have any thoughts on this years UHA. Great outfits - loved the noise they made as they walked! Went to the museum to see them this afternoon - really good, very relaxed visit - chatting away to the squad members. The museum was not as busy as I expected - a few tourists - seemed to be made up of mostly family n friends. Procession seemed to go well - excellent weather (peerie bit breezy at some points along the route). Couldn't get in the park after the burning this year, bit of a shame - but overall seemed an excellent time was had by all.
  3. ^^ Gem, how wonderful to have that Shetland connection, enjoy and all the bits dat come wi dat. In general to this thread (and others before), when do you become a Shetlander? . Anyway, I think a lot o dis has been covered in edder threads. Gem, enjoy that Shetland connection – I think it’s brawly special. Do his such n bonny avatar, I think I’ll hae to fin a bonny pic o mysel too!
  4. We are discussing making a windmill for our own use. This guy has been recommended to us. http://www.scoraigwind.com/axialplans/index.htm
  5. ^^ flippin heck Pooks, dus quick aff da mark. I was just dustin aff da auld issues of Shetland Life to leaf thro, to fin da article and dus beat me to it! Ta for that!
  6. I kinda love the way that the Lerwick UHA evokes such strong feelings in people, you either love it or hate it. I love the procession - and try not to think too much about how seriously some folk are about the whole thing. The article in Shetland Life a while back still makes me laugh when I think about it. (the one where he wrote about if UHA was new idea being presented to the council - problems with H & S and equal ops etc). I'm laughing thinking about it - think I will go and hunt it out now for a read!
  7. ^^ Pooks Empty houses in Firth is possibly due to a combination of things, lack of amenities, I think people used to mention public transport as a problem. Perception of the area is also another problem. And where else would you find such a high density of local authority housing in a remote area (does depend on what you class remote). I don't think you will ever get a definative answer. ^^ Ghostrider If folks are having a problem with neighbours/cars etc, tell Housing and Environmental Health. They can do a lot these days, it does takes time, but things can change. Don't know what you can do about resident crims though!
  8. I wonder if we need a seperate Radio Shetland / SIBC thread(s)? I'm young(ish), but still like to listen to Radio Shetland. I work shifts, so don't listen every night, but if I'm home about, makin da tea, I put it on. I can't abide SIBC, but that is purely personal and can understand that some folk like to listen to it. I would have loved to answer the original q, but I didna hear Radio Shetland, and not the biggest fan of fiddle music. edit: why will the flea no go on like a da either councillors?
  9. I have never lived in local authority housing in Shetland, but I have worked all over Shetland with local authority/private/housing assocation tenants and owner occupiers. ^^ Spency7 While yes, I agree that Firth (not Mossbank), may have a higher turn over of tenants compared to other areas in Shetland, this is due partly to the fact that there are vacant (& good sized) properties in the area. I don't believe there is any other area of Shetland that has this number of empty local authority housing. ^^ Ghostrider I don't know how you can comment that "SIC sites", (what I would call housing schemes) are check to these types of issues. Does that mean that in your view most SIC schemes have this type of antisocial behaviour? Apologies if this is turning into a thread about local athority housing, rather than Mossbank/Firth (which are two very seperate areas). While my experience is from a couple of years ago, I was not aware then of any more anti social behavior in Firth/Mossbank than anywhere else in Shetland. All the best for Stormin norman when they move. I wonder where you live now? Maybe you should get in touch with some one in the area before move? Is the tenants group in the area still on the go? This may be of some use: http://www.shetland.gov.uk/housingoptionsguide/tenants-forum.asp
  10. I'm never had my identity nicked: but have had a clubbie book phone me up and then ask me to confirm my name, address and DOB, before they would tell me why they were calling. They couldn't seem to understand that as they had called me, I would not be telling them these details. ^^ I love the idea of nicking your own identity, making pots of money and claiming no knowledge of it!
  11. Very tasty falafels (?). It is part of COPE ltd: http://www.cope.ltd.uk/businesses/
  12. I was only aware of two photographers - were there more? It was a good gig - a right mix o folk: loads of young peeps and then us olders eens too.
  13. I just presumed it was for Grantfield Garage, as they are the only ones who do/did 24hr fuel.
  14. skuyk or skoit = look such a descriptive word - I use it lots.
  15. oh dear, I feel a sore head tomorrow coming on. Dat will be too much white wine da night. Afore I'm sitting at da PC @ 2.00 in the morning, it cana be a good sign!
  16. I’m had a quick look n canna find anything on this. Should this go under music or Shetland DialectMODS can decide. Anyway been @ at friends house tonight (well, sat in their garage, but that’s another story) and he played a song on his IP Pod thingy by Eddie ?? (not Barclay), we think song was called Lowrie Lowrie, from around the 1950’s. Was in the style of Eddie Barclay. Anyway, song was priceless and I wondered if anyone knew the surname of the singer and a bit more about him?
  17. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=w0BTq5kWuuI apologies if someone has posted this already
  18. My letter of support is in the post to my local councillors today (and a copy to Kathy Hubbard too). I would email the councillors, but from previous experience I'm not convinced some of them read their emails! I'm not going to go into great detail as to why I support it, briefly: I'm not sporty, Don't like pubs very much, Love live music, Love going to the cinema, Lack places I can meet friends at the weekend that aren't full of p*ssed people.
  19. whaur at?? oops just spotted north boat! Ignore me!
  20. http://www.shetland.gov.uk/icecast/ It has wind speed as mph on here, how do you convert to knots?
  21. Quote from http://www.shetland.gov.uk/socialwork-health/FinanceandWelfare.asp Equalisation of Residential Care Charges 2007 - 2008 Shetland Charitable Trust operates a scheme to equalise residential care charges for Shetland residents who receive their care in one of the residential care settings in Shetland. The underlying principle of the scheme is that no Shetland resident will have to pay more than the benchmark charge of £435.30 per week for their care. A subsidy will be paid to all residents of care homes who pay the full charge and who have been resident in Shetland for at least one year. The benchmark charge for 2007/08 has been set at £435.30 per week. The amount of subsidy will be the difference between the benchmark and the actual cost of care. It is understood from the Inland Revenue that the subsidy, as a charitable gift, will not be liable for tax. I'm been thinking a lot about this since this thread started. I can't make my mind up how I feel about it, without knowing a lot more facts. I know that there is strong public perception in Shetland, but there are 2 sides to every case. Anyway, it was interesting that you only get the subsidy once you have been resident for 1 year.
  22. I love Shetlink, only problem is I don't get much work done some days, cos I'm too busy reading what's been going on. Not much for posting a lot (too shy!!), but I enjoy the debates! I've been trying to guess who abody is in real life - can only guess a couple!!
  23. I'm fully aware of where the sheltered housing is . However as I said you don't have to be retired to get a sheltered house. I'm very curious as to what the actual number of retired people who come up from south to claim services here? Is it 1, 10, 50 people a year? Is this number something that can be found out?
