MJ
Pupils 'to take allegiance oath'School-leavers are to be encouraged to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen under new government proposals being unveiled on British citizenship Go on then, I'd love to know others opinions. penfold
I think I would have to say no, making a oath of allegiance would not make people better citizen.
Evil Inky
Go on then, I'd love to know others opinions.Shouldn't we be teaching children to think for themselves rather than kowtowing to the state ?
MJ
I have a friend who refuses to send her children to uniformed youth groups because the promising to do their duty to the Queen and similar. She even withdrew her daughter from the local non denominational choir because they said a prayer which included the Queen after each rehearsal. We actually had quite an interesting conversation when she found out I was pro monarchy, apparently no one would have guessed. But come on 16year olds asked to swear allegiance to the queen, what's that going to teach them? That it's okay to make half hearted promises that don't mean anything? What happens if they refuse? What next swearing allegiance to the Union Jack? When away with Youth groups even the english preferred to be under the Saltire than the Union Jack. Lord Goldsmith, who quit government in June, believes that citizenship ceremonies for teenagers would help improve their sense of what it means to be a British citizen What is britain anyway? When I was briefly involved with the BYC they told me that Scotland was a region of England. If they're the future of british politics then we definitely have problems.I know it causes all sorts of trouble and arguments but personally I think an actual GB football team would be far more successful at encouraging pride in being British. I think the only thing a British football team would encourage would be support for the SNP
Seaflech
Maybe the Government should look at why national pride is low, rather than slapping this proposal on and hoping everything will sort itself out. If they spent a bit more time supporting the ethnic majority rather than minority, if they listened to the public view on Iraq, Afghanistan, identity cards, if there wasn't so much sleaze, corruption and incompetence in power then maybe folk would feel a bit prouder of being a member of the United State of Britain. No I don't think anybody should be made to swear oath to a bunch of archaic, in-bred, non-elected spongers. Forcing children to blindly follow orders to support the head of the country - isn't that what the Hitler Youth did?!
Fjool
I'm pretty much with Seafletch on this one. Well said. Besides, this approach is rather missing the point: respect is earned, not enforced.
sassermaet
I agree with what's being said here. Why should we have to pledge allegiance to a family who barely do anything these days anyway? I agree with Seaflech's point; it would get like Nazi Germany if this were the case.

Mag
I dunno. I think making teenagers swear an oath of allegiance could be just what this country needs. The back lash just might cause the beginning of the end of the monarchy?
JAStewart
I think its a ridiculous proposal. First it'll be the Queen then it'll be some Judaeo-Christian deity no doubt. Don't even get me started on 'God save the Queen' urgh. I have absolutely no respect for the royal family whatsoever - why should I? What have they ever done to benefit me? I feel that they now just exist to create tabloid headlines. The UK needs a constitution. Its things like this that seriously make me consider leaving Britain when I am old enough to be in a position to do so.
JustMe
JAStewart wroteThe UK needs a constitution. We do have one.....sort of. At least I took a subject called "British Constitution" many years ago as part of my O levels. Just that it is not written down.

Para Handy
I’m not surprised that Alex Salmond does not want this after all An Oath of allegiance the only Oath of allegiance he wants is for him self. An Oath of allegiance to Alex Samond. The Magna Carta 1215, The Bill of Rights 1689 and Reform Act 1832 are nothing Alex Salmond has arived to save the day. We can’t be part of the UK says National Socialist of Scotland The Führer has spoken but there is no problem with him having his head stuck so far up the Poop Tube of the EU I am quite capable of making up my own mind of what I want to be and it is nobody else’s business but my own. And what’s more I think children are a lot more intelligent than we give them credit for and should be proud of what they are tall, short, fat or thin, black or white. They should let children be children for as long as they want to be instead of brainwashing them into being something they are not ready for “swear oath to a bunch of archaic, in-bred, non-elected spongers†As the Labor party are elected spongers and are no ? They cost just as much and just as dirty and to think we go from being children to so called adults who voted these morons in, not just once but in for a third term a bunch of liars and crooks who have been cooking the books and robbing the public blind I asked my eight year old nephew if you should have people who use there campaign money the way that Peter Hain, Harriet Harman ect did he said no and what’s more he would not let them near his piggy bank. And then he said is it just a pity that Guy Fawkes failed
Evil Inky
And then he said is it just a pity that Guy Fawkes failedEven if he'd succeeded he wouldn't have killed any Labour politicians. Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605: the Labour Party wasn't formed until 1906.
