Malachy
I think it would be fair to say that just about anything Cash covered was much better than the original, or anyone else's cover. In some cases he did a great job, but compare his version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down to the original by The Band, and you wonder why he bothered. It just doesn't work. One song that I'd have expected to come up already, but I suppose not many folk listen to it anymore- Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help From My Friends is far, far better than the Beatles' original. I still love the Beatles version, but Joe Cocker takes it and makes it his own, and it does sound so good.
Neil R
M. Ward's Let's Dance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgYQ90prZ4M That's definitely one of the best that springs to mind. I also love the version of Buddy Holly's Rave On from his album earlier this year. Someone mentioned Johnny Cash; I agree that his covers were very hit and miss. Among my favourites are his versions of Heart of Gold and Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down, and of course Hurt.
