Scorrie
Where on Shetland do folk get their hen feedstuffs and kit from? Any suppliers of huts? Hens? What breeds? Anyone?
righter
Generally hen hooses are made out of old bits of wood and baling twine... you might get someone handy to make one, sometimes they are advertised on Shetlink. Having one from south might be expensive to ship. Feed and feeders etc from Harbro on Staney hill. Breeds...well often warrens are advertised in paper now and then,or look on shetlink. Or ask around locally. I know some people go the incubator and fertile egg route, eggs again from south.
Scorrie
Thanks for the info, Righter. I'm not averse to building my own, looks like the toolbox will have to be opened
Girzie
Wells Poultry Supplies online have good feeders and drinkers. They also do hen houses and the carriage is reasonable. Don't know what the quality is like as I haven't seen one.

Fifi
You can do things like that (not saying that is how the photo above was necessarily done) very quickly and easily using apps for your phone. There area loads of apps. Camera+ is a good one.

jaydee67
Dean Gilfillan in Weisdale will also supply you with feeders. food, bedding, etc. Depends on how many hens you are thinking to have - a small shed with a perch added and nesting boxes added - hole cut in the side of a plastic drum works well and can be kinder on your back for cleaning and you can get inside on bad days! Keep an eye on the paper and Shetlink classifieds, there are often point of lay birds advertised.

That's where yun ex Shalder bus ended her days I'm led to believe. Allans of Gillock, Dunrossness also do (or did not long ago) feeders, drinkers, mesh wire for punds if you don't want/can't have fully free range etc.
mandie
Harbro in lerwick next to calor gas sells all you need
paulb
deans is slightly cheaper than harbro. but theres not much in it. if you can get hold of some pallets you could knock a coop up very cheaply. the cheaper coops from south would blow away up here.
