Ghostrider
^ Nah. I wrote a letter to them because I was "legally" obliged to do so under the terms of a contract I have with the SIC. More fool me, had I just crashed on, said nothing and done what I wanted anyway, they'd be none the wiser and everybody would be happy. JustMe
Back on topic there are of course a lot of older folk who have to come into town for appointments at the Gilbert Bain Hospital and then have to hang around for ages before the bus home. Viking, being warm(ish) and dry is excellent for this especially now they have more comfortable chairs including a couple fit for the disabled to use. engineer21
wonder how many one bedroom flats can be squezzed into the viking........ after all thats the investment for the future.....
Staney Dale
Does anyone know how much the SIC makes from leasing the very busy Chinese restaurant above? I thought the thinking behind building such a big building in the first place might(?) have been to finance the bus station through that. As regards bus companies paying for the station, as I understand it all services are bought in by the SIC so bus companies would have to include these costs in their tender, so the SIC would just pay anyway. It is really the people who need the station, not the buses - they could just hang out at Gremista and only come in to pass by the stops. Gorgonzola Butt-cheese
This is a waiting room. Is this what really cleaning out the funds ? Install separate coin operated electric meters for heating and light and coin operated security lockers. Incorporate the cleaning duties into the duties of the already employed street cleaners. Waiting room remains and money saved. Now pay off the chap who though up the original closure plan and save another 40 grand a year.
JustMe
Having staff on site adds to security for passengers as well as for the fixtures and fittings. Also of course they deal with lots of queries from passengers. But maybe one way to gain extra revenue would be to install a hot and cold drinks machine. And yes maybe make the lockers coin operated or chargeable in some other way.
ariel
It is frustrating as it reveals such poor planning. We spent a fortune on the bus station and now all that investment will be wasted, as well as losing us a valuable service. Same with the camp site. If they had come with an idea to get value from the building, we might have been able to feel some respect. Put a Council service desk in it maybe - one-stop-shop info service to save folk trailing down round the North Ness monoliths.

I would hate to lose it - even if it was left unheated. Trying to get 6 or so buses worth of people round 5pm under that overhang would be interesting, with teenagers, the disabled, elderly, mum and dads with pushchairs, toddlers... all trying to keep dry and see which bus is in... To visitors, it's going to seem bizarre in the extreme that there is no bus station. The bus routes and times are akward enough as it is without them having someone explain that they can go visit but not get back So many use the left luggage too. Maybe just send all tourists to the town hall for guidance.
AM
There are a couple of online petitions to save the Viking Bus Station, the links for both are at the bottom of the Council cuts article on the Shetland News website. I'd attach the links but can't remember how to do it

1979 Sheltie
From Shet News Councillors also criticised that the figures of potential savings didn’t stack up, while Andrea Manson wondered why a waiting room plus freight centre is paying rates of almost £16,500. ? So they charge rates for thier own building ?
paulb
yes they do. dont even ask what they are paying to have scalloway school empty. this could have been cut in half with a few sheets of ply bet its not been done yet.
1979 Sheltie
But the rates go back into the pot so technically they pay nothing ? what do you think ?
