peeriebryan
This is the most misleading article I've read on the Stuart Riach/Dogs Against Drugs subject so far "Islanders' own sniffer dog is drug-bust hero" - The Evening Times website Drug bust hero? A SNIFFER dog called Buzz was the toast of Shetland after helping in the largest ever drugs seizure on the islands. The toast of Shetland?a Glasgow drugs courier caught with the help of BuzzNot true. The dog did not have anything at all to do with catching the guy. A team of undercover policemen caught him. An undercover policeman with a sniffer dog? What would be the point of being undercover if you have a big black sniffer dog? Who is feeding the news agencies this nonsense? Is it the police themselves? Evil Inky
Who is feeding the news agencies this nonsense? Is it the police themselves? Was the availability of illegal drugs in Shetland actually affected by this seizure ? If not, I'd suggest the whole exercise was a waste of time. Ally
The evening news in notoriously right-wing, reactionary and sensationalist. It's kinda like a wattered down version of the sun without Page 3 and the garish headlines. Pay it no mind!
Distortio
The court heard police had been tipped off to look out for a foot passenger arriving on the ferry from Aberdeen. my god, last time i was on the boat the place was crawling with foot passengers. if only the police had been waiting on the pier that morning, they could have cleared up. it's not really surprising the dogs get the headlines, they have to be seen to be working, even if they're not. old mrs blinkeredbreeks might be less inclined to do another sponsored tea party in an attempt to save the community from the evil scourge of drugs if she thought the money raised could be just as effectively spent on a new frisbee for fido. Styles
Just goes to show what a spin the media can put on any story! I saw the dog once and tried to pet it, the person with it nearly went off his nut! Totally think its a waste of resources that could do better some where else. Njugle
I saw the dog once and tried to pet it, the person with it nearly went off his nut! That's what really bothers me as a dog lover, a friend of mine with small kids met the dog oot and aboot once and the handler had to shout at the kids not to speak to the dog, that, to me, really sucks. And the time i saw the dog at the airport, that was the golden lab, it was clear to me that from the dogs body language it was keen to socialise, but restricted from doing so. I know they have to carefully choose the personality of the dog but putting a social animal in that scenario is like an abuse. I mind seeing a "you've been framed" video of an air hostess trying to speak to a drug-dog and being mildly attacked. As many have said, there's more PR going on than anything else, and the investigation unseen will always provide better, and safer, results. Mongo
I have heard multiple stories about the incompetence of the dogs, far too many to completely dismiss, but the shetland times are a major sponsor of the dogs so i think some good shetland nazi media propaganda is at work. Styles
Has anyone on this forum actually stuck up for the dogs? It seems to be unviversally thought of as a waste of money and useless except by those old dears etc who have coffee mornings etc for cash for it and dont know actually the first thing about drugs! Distortio
i believe the koreans have a quite forward thinking way of dealing with this problem...
Styles
I have seen a few Korean dishes on the take away list for a few local take aways!
peeriebryan
I hear the Northern Constabulary is paying for a new sniffer dog for Shetland. Apparently it's a Springer Spaniel which, according to a mate of mine who trains dogs for Customs and Excise, make far better sniffer dogs than Labradors
Willies_landy
Looking at this it is high time the charity was renamed. How about DOGS AGAINST DETECTION.
Styles
I heard the policeman on the wireless the other night going on about the new dog, all they are good for is putting folk off smuggling drugs. All the actual big finds etc seem to be from intelligence and the dogs are just taken along for the ride.
Ally
Regardless of if they are effective or not, the police are seen to be doing something. In terms of PR this is exactly the kind of thing the police are keen on. Like dawn raids and annual campaigns - it's all media orientated.
