keetiebairdie
Our memories of smells seem to be related to past times and memories. One of my favourites: Christmas mornings, the smells of roasting turkey and trimmings, cooking veg, Christmas pud steaming away, and the first sherry of the day. Happy days! Fontal
Nothing beats the smell of a garage that has an old classic car in it, the combination of oil, petrol and leather is just heaven.

Not my idea of heaven but I agree that it is very distinctive and you know where you are and what you'll see before you open your eyes. Even in the pelting rain yesterday at the Clickimin, the Alvis cars had a hint of that aroma.

khitajrah
When I was growing up it was the smell of the thawing forest floor in the spring when the snow was still on the ground. I just learned that this 'fresh earth' smell is caused by the volatile compounds secreted by actinomycetes (a large group of Gram-positive bacteria).
