strange that the scottish government (or was it king alex)decided to delay the timing of the choice of preferred bidder for the ferry service to coincide with the local council elections methinks scottish government is a thorn in shetlands side can we begin to gather enough dane guild to buy our freedom

fionajohn, I think du's hit the nail on the head.

 

They are a thorn in our side and we are a thorn in their side. And they know it.

 

And my gut feeling about today's announcement isn't good.....

Serco has a strong and growing presence in Scotland, working on behalf of the Scottish Government, local authorities and the UK Government. Our contracts include Scatsta Airport, the ACCESS joint venture with Glasgow City Council providing IT and property services, management of a fleet of support vessels for the Royal Navy at Faslane, CCTV and roadside emergency phones for Transport Scotland, the operation of HMP Kilmarnock and offender tagging for the Scottish Prison Service, and facilities management for NHS Scotland at the Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Stirlingshire and Wishaw General Hospital in North Lanarkshire. Serco also has customer contact and service centres in Fort William, Brora and Glasgow.

 

 

No so sure aboot goin on the boat efter they tak over.......I can see hid noo, roll aboard at 5 and be deemed to have had too much,get tagged and confined to cabin from 7 to 7 (although we will have good wifi) sail forever and ever and arrive in the Falklands with recomissioned harriers takin off wir stern ramp and be doubled up as a hospital ship.

 

Think all just tak the plane (and no the Scatsa one)

the extended dry dock period will come to an end. however does this mean safety will be at risk, how will ships safety be checked if less time is spent in dry dock??

 

The 'extended dry dock period' was a one off this year anyhow. The ships are now 10 years old and required a longer dry dock period than normal.

 

It does seem though, that the new contract states that the Hjaltland and Hrossey will not be used to cover the Hamnavoe when she is in dry dock.

I'm delighted, they will build on the northlink ferry experence which can only be good for us, they built on P&O, the next lot will build on them.

 

Northlink was too complacent and not developing the service, but just offering the same old same. I also think they came in too biggsy, how the mighty fall.

 

I do hope they will change the boats names bk to St clair etc a shetland tradition northlink ignored.

 

Get rig of the reclyning chairs for couchets, raise the passage prices and lower the cabin prices.

 

Can we have free parking back in Aberdeen like we did before?

 

AAAAnd if you use the tag 'now your crusing' can you please bace that on an actual cruse ship and not just the cost of a cruse?

 

I'm more interested on getting the links to scotland/Uk developed than some folk getting to norway, thanks! if it was viable then a big white boat we have shairs in would be linking in with us now.

 

So thanks particulary to the front line staff on Northlink, thank god for TUPE you will just move over like you did befour

 

although i was realy hoping that P&O would get it.

errrm no thanks. A lot of folk are quite happy with no cabin when it comes to saving in excess of £50 a night. Don't see why I should subsidise those in luxury whilst I sleep on a couch

 

Fine that for you maybe, but your male and don't have bairns to worry about, or have to go to work &/or school straight off the boat. Nor have you known a different service where having enough beds at a low enough price that you wouldn't dream not having a cabin.

Easy one:

 

SNP want to bury the news that they've dumped the Scottish Calmac/RBoS venture known as Northlink and given the contract the a UK company that has it's finger in many UK pies across the UK....did I mention the UK? Key word there....

 

And who also has contracts at Faslane...which is rather 'awkward', nay, an embarrassing situation for a political party that wants Faslane closed down.

 

Stuff like that won't go down well with 'Braveheart' voters who prefer romantic pish and myth to political, business and economic reality. They'd choke on their Irn Bru and Tunnocks at the thought of any business going to what they'd see as an 'English' company.

 

What better day to do it than when all eyes are on election results? :wink:

Serco selected as preferred bidder to deliver lifeline ferry services to the Northern Isles in Scotland

Serco Group plc (Serco), the international service company, announces today, that it has been selected as preferred bidder by Transport Scotland for a new contract to deliver lifeline ferry services to the Northern Isles. The contract, which is expected to be signed in the coming months and is due to start in Summer 2012, has a total estimated value of approximately £350m over six years.

 

Under the contract Serco will operate the ferry services for freight and passengers between the Scottish mainland and the Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands, providing essential access and supplies for the islanders. The staff employed by the current operator NorthLink are expected to transfer to the new service under TUPE regulations.

 

Serco will work in partnership with local stakeholders and with Transport Scotland to improve service standards by more effectively meeting the needs of islanders, businesses and the increasing number of visitors to the Northern Isles whilst delivering better value for money for the taxpayer. This contract will build on Serco's experience of managing and transforming critical local transport services such as Northern Rail, Scatsta Airport on the Shetland Islands and London's Woolwich Ferry. Serco also has extensive operations in the international marine market including services for the Royal Navy through which it operates more ships under the UK flag than any other company.

 

Christopher Hyman, Chief Executive of Serco Group, said: "We are delighted to have been chosen by Transport Scotland for this crucial lifeline ferry service. By bringing our proven transport and marine expertise, our approach will enable us to improve the service to customers whilst delivering good value for the taxpayer. This contract adds to our strong presence in Scotland supporting the improved delivery of public services.
