  1. if he's under 16 speak really nicely to George at the hostel over 16 try Islesburgh House?
  2. ooh not a happy cat, and she's expressing it so. Female cats can be rather more disjointed about change than neutered males, just be glad she isn't spraying (yes females can and do when their nose is put out of joint). Tapping the nose gently if found doing the naughty act is one way, but cats are rather like humans in not liking to do their business with an audience. You could use orange oil products in and around the sink to discourage her from going near the sink. Freshly ground black pepper is another good deterrent but a bit messier. Or you could just bribe her, every time you notice one of them using the litter tray & cat flap give favourite treat.
  3. Could be part of the shetland syndrome? I say this as a Shelty! I think it's more a scottish problem. I still get a shock when using Zebra Crossings in London - cars actually stop! Even on busy roads.
  4. reins I discovered with 1 are extremely dangerous and that's not counting when they pull the puppet on a string. imagining 3 playing puppet on a string while trying to lock up the car
  5. So you can afford the £40+ for a taxi to get to work on time if someone you look after requires attention meaning you miss the bus. Or you'd pass up on a job interview because it didn't fit in with the bus timetables. How about passing up on extra work because they phone 5mins after the bus has left because someone has decided the weather's too nice to bother to turn up to work. You know the one that used to bother me. Folk who used to complain about Florence Grains and her taxis. Those folk with empty cars driving past hers at the same meetings/events. Did any of them offer her a lift? For what ever reason not everyone can drive, cycling to Lerwick is not an option that's really feasible, not without allowing 3-4hrs depending on the weather.
  6. Karma Those who've had hardship are more likely to help out, even when they have very little themselves. Those who've helped when hitching thank you very much, I've met some really amazing people. I've been lucky enough to get to my gran before the emergency doctor. travelled routes the buses don't do. Picked up tickets forgotten when catching the bus for the boat, the list goes on and on. The kindness of strangers really gets me too. I've been helping some teenage mums recently. The help offered by folk who've never met them has really warmed my heart, especially when the only help their own families have given has been 4 dinner sets when they didn't even have a bed. But then I understand the OP's point of view, I couldn't believe some of the folk I met south, folk who've always had handouts from the state, charities, etc. Have the fully furnished, nicely decorated council house, the car, the full sky package, the latest games consules, laptops, phones & gadgets. And they still complain, expect stuff for free, but never seem to help out those really in need. I have had some amazing freebees from Shetlink, the best I can think of was an almost complete collection of Buffy videos during the big snow a couple of years back. 1 happy daughter. She has now finally watched them all.
  7. because Lerwick went down the super practice route. there is 1 practice covering Lerwick and the surrounding area. It's nuts. It isn't helped that in Shetland there is no choice, You have to go to the surgery that covers your area, not the one with room or closest to you or accessible by public transport.
  8. As the scroungers of Europe? It was embarrassing enough having to explain to folk we were from Shetland not Faroe, without then having to listen to the rants about the Faroese lazy scroungers, subsidy junkies. Oh wait a minute we've got a bit of experience of living off subsidies up here already.
  9. the "Dutch White" is a New Zealand term for the coffee in question and known not just in these isles.
  10. Me? ty Frances & Jo for the photos
  11. the lady in beside hair by peter, the old toilets block by the old infants on king harald st was amazing for me. from shetland directory Crooks Lisa, Physiotherapy, 31 King Harald Street, Lerwick ZE1 0EQ 01950 477413 Mobile 07880 847701 lisacrooks@btinternet.com
  12. Well yes, but everyone reading had the same 1st response they were just too polite to actually type it out.

  14. Me I just get me. Companies I've been director of, stuff I've done at local authorities, news articles etc. But then there are 4 of us in the world with my surname, and I'm related to 2 of them.
  15. Think I said in Life Skills we'd be interested again, the salads were lovely, carrots ditto, but maybe we'll no get quite so many this year
  16. I was under the impression that otters where the only native mammal to Shetland (or at least recorded in the times of the Vikings) all other Mustelids have been imported. From escapes from fur farms to wonderful stories of non payment of taxes, it was quite interesting to research, but the A4 sheet it produced is long gone.
  17. But it's been widespread throughout England this year? They were talking about it back in January, but farmers were complaining that not everyone was being honest about the losses. It was one of those "food" stories about how lamb prices were going to go up again this year, I think on the BBC.
  18. Being also of German Jewish decent I think you forget, it was not just the Jews who were put to the "Work Camps" the Disabled where sent to them too to "work"
  19. Same goes to anyone else using the road, vehicle or not, it helps to be as safe as possible but it's the other ejits you need to watch out for.
