I did have a couple of eyewatering cars in the early eighties. The first was a Mk1 Capri GTXL with a 1750cc engine with high lift cam and a nice webber, also a single box Jan Speed exhaust. The 2nd was a 3.1 RS Escort MkII. Always getting pulled, it must have been the most examined cars in the area, used to annoy the plod as I did have the insurance for the cars including the upgrades... insurance was good then, simple.

I've just seen that from the 14th of October, the JET bus that goes from the bus station to the airport will be starting at the ferry terminal in the mornings - 07:35 on weekdays and 07:25 on Saturdays.

There's even going to be a couple of return buses each day that stop by the terminal before going back to the bus station.

The timetable is here - http://www.stagecoachbus.com/PdfUploads/Timetable_44787_727-JET.pdf

After Googling it I see that they already posted it on their Facebook page, but I thought it was worth putting here as well. I only found out because I happened to be checking out the timetables.

Finally, a positive change from Serco!

It won't last long, with all the roads doomed to failure, all at once, there may be justification for a 4x4 to be used all year around.

As I left CADSS on Monday and had worked as a substance misuse worker for 4 years I can assure you that things are very different in 2013.  I am not aware of any 'new' users coming into service in the last year and the under 25s are now over 25s.  Heroin is still used in Shetland but the whole scene has changed and more people are on substitute prescribing which takes the chaos out of users lives and improves the chances of accessing the services that lead to recovery.  I spent 4 years working with drugs and alcohol clients and sharing their journeys so I do know what I am talking about.

Open are a peer education project now based at Market House. It's volunteers are 16-25 and visit various locations including schools and youth groups about various issues. Shetland's been a bit behind in these things, but they've been doing great work. No longer do you have to cringe as your register teacher does the sex and drugs talks at you.

and as an edit I'll add their FB page https://www.facebook.com/OpenPeerEducationProject?fref=ts

OK, another try a clearing a very common misconception.

    NOBODY PAYS ROAD TAX.

    It was aboloshed in 1937..

    Motorists pay Vehicle Excise Duty

Roads are paid for through general taxation.  Voluntarily paying 'extra' doesn't make sense.

Insurance is a good idea, though can't see how it will help much if you get 'splattered'

I think he believes he is being "oh so clever" and will point out that it is the "drivers" he refers to, who would refer to road tax. No doubt this adds to their ignorance or something similarly ironic. Of course, this is not particularly clear due to the odd sentence construction.

if somebody is on the road with no lights, when they should have lights, then they are at fault.
As per my response to the OP, I don't consider that it makes any difference what kind of vehicle they are using, or that it makes much sense to put an individuals behaviour onto everybody else that uses that kind of vehicle too.
As you say, there are poor "road users" of every description and I feel we'd be better off working on those, than trying to drag it into some drivers vs cyclists issue, when 95% of both are doing not so bad.

Peat meanwhile seem determined to bring in every possible meme, that ever appears in any "cycling" discussion, at the earliest opportunity, to ensure all waters are as muddied as possible and everybody stops reading before we get to anything interesting

its a taboo subject for alot, i discussed it with my parents a few times over the years, i knew what my mums worst nightmare would be. i knew she wanted her ashes scattered at Anfield, Tho i am sure she was joking about it being in the visiting teams direction at a crucial moment!! my dad and i joked that i would just put a builders chute upto the bedroom window and send him down it to the cemetery at the back of the house. we had light hearted chats, but i was never in any doubt as to what they really wanted and didnt want. Sadly my brothers were clueless and when we had a decision to make after my mum had a bad stroke, they did what they wanted and put my mum through 6 years of her worst nightmare, with them making the odd phone call and visit home, with myself and my husband doing the caring.seeing how broken she was and hearing her cry because her boys never visited was hard, I had numerous rows with them over it. then when she died they again took over and gave her all the hypocritical pomp and ceremony..... that again she didnt want. its important to know what people you care for want, but also providing the right people know, it can make it easier on the family to do the right thing.

shetlandpeat reacted to Mistymaud in B12 Deficiency Can Kill
It is now known that b12 deficiency could affect 1/3rd of the population. It has been known for nearly 200 years that this illness ultimately causes death, but prior causes psychiatric problems, paralysis, dementia, vision issues and a plethora of other neurological problems. Hardly surprising since b12 is necessary for the production of myelin which protects nerves and brains.
Unfortunately, in modern society, most medical professions treat b12 deficiency as something trival - the knowledge of it is lost.

In Scotland there are no medical guidelines for treating this illness - indeed, even if you present with typical symptoms it's rare you will be tested for it. Even if you are, and you are deficient, on many occasions patients are only given treatment suitable for vegans.
This treatment will raise b12 levels in the blood and the doctor will pronounce you treated - but it only raises levels in the blood, it does nothing to stop or repair the damage at cellular level.

If you know someone who has emotional issues, for example seems very anxious, or someone who has dementia, or someone who has MS, or someone who has a child with autism - then these could in fact be b12 deficiency. Yet it is highly unlikely the patients have even heard mention of it. Their doctors will not even give it serious consideration.

I'm including a link to a documentary video quite recently released on Youtube and I hope I'm not contravening any rules. This video gives 4 examples of patients who were close to death before the cause was revealed to be b12 deficiency. It includes a doctor - complete in his diaper with his feeding tube - he's a brave man to come out and say he was ignorant of the cause too.

Try and forget everything you thought you knew about b12 and remember that in Scotland there are no guidelines for treating this illness. It's not considered important enough.

    Hi,

    A very interesting post.

Could this be a possible answer as to why there is a high incidence of MS on Shetland  through misdiagnosis?

or could be a B12 deficiency t rather than or Vitamin D ?

It would appear from the link that B12 deficiency is becoming very overlooked and on a rapid increase, it would be interesting to see serum results of B12 in various groups  of people and just see what numbers of people are actually truly with very low in B12, especially as it can be masked .

Interesting as to what the medical profession here and Scotland make of the link.

By 'eck - you're quick on the uptake, aren't you!!!!

    I'm impressed!!!!!

My main concern regarding MS is a common-sense one.
We have 100s of MS specialists - we have NO B12 specialist. None. In the UK.
How can someone be a specialist in one disease that produces exactly the same symptoms as another disease, without knowing anything about the 2nd disease. You cannot diagnose one until you rule out the other. Yes, there must be many, many cases of misdiagnosed MS.

Personally I believe there are also links between Vit d def and b12. This is down to personal research and nothing else, so I'm not really going there. What I will say is, if you are low on vit d, have your b12 checked as well.

The problem with testing is that if you supplement even minute amounts, the serum b12 will return to normal. And by supplement, that can mean eating a small piece of liver each day.

Two things that I've learned from the historical research:
    1) Blood test results are not a diagnosis of b12 deficiency, they are purely one of the symptoms and the easiest to rectify.
    2) Once treatment commences (by supplementation or whatever) all bloods return to normal.
This does not mean the patient is 'cured' it means one of the symptoms has been resolved. You can still be dying.

Your medical professionals do know - at least at higher levels and your government knows.

I cannot play it or any instrument, except the harmonica.
In fact I have never seen a kora in real life, so I got my ideas from pictures and by reading about them.
I love almost all types of music from blues to opera and I came across the kora by accident and the sound fascinated me. I then became more engrossed in it the more I heard. There are some beautiful pieces on the web.
Look this up on youtube.  A Welsh, harp virtuosa, name of Catrin Finch and a Senegalese kora virtuoso Seckou Keita.
Whilst playing it remind yourself that they are jamming to an old African song. I get so caught up with this kora and harp duet, that I get tears in my eyes not, from sadness, but at the beauty of it.
    Regards,
    Rex.

Hooray, I have just finished building a full size kora, 21 strings.
It has a 42cm/16in gourd, the overall length is 160cm/ 63ins.
It is tuned to F at the moment but I may change this.
I now have to build a hard case for it which will double up as a coffin.
I suppose that I should start building the second one now but first to celebrate with a couple of bottles of Rioja..
I will post some 'photos if anyone is interested and I can work out how to do that.
    Yes it is Shetland News.
How many others have been built here?
    Regards,
    Rex
