Jordan
Well, go write an essay, and stop trying to force Mareel down peoples throats. Following your own argument, perhaps you should stop trying to force it out of your anus.
JAStewart
Who's forcing an opinion here? There are lies, damned lies, and statistics.Mareel, in it's present conception, falls into all those categories. I don't need a crystal ball to see what is going to happen to Mareel. Just a realistic outlook.I'd happily volunteer as a worker at Mareel for no pay. The reward for me is the music. Me and Energizer had this same attitude, no money, just music. So yeah, sign me up and I'll put some time into Mareel. From here the conversation turned to Shetland bands, not Mareel.

nic
Well not long to wait one way or another. Let’s see which councillors have any backbone left. One of the reasons I never paid much attention to this proposal to begin with is that I thought it would be a no brainer. But no the lobbying and fancy designs obviously swayed a punch drunk previous council. It’s just as well they have a huge false sense of security in the stock market fund. Hope it’s not all invested in the emerging industries fund!! Why can’t the design include a Frankie and Bennies, Bingo hall, Pizza hut and a cathedral? Then we imagine we are the furthest north city in the UK.
Guest Anonymous
Yes, well,,,,, Maybe I was getting a bit hot under the collar... As I have said before, I am 100% behind a music venue. tlady
^^ Tag on a bowling alley and a pool hall and they've got my vote..
JAStewart
I don't see why Mareel can't have other things attached/associated with it. Why can't it have a shopping complex? Why can't it have bowling?
Ghostrider
^^ My vote would be to tag on a casino and maybe a strip joint, then the whole thing might just pay. After all, neither is anything the North Ness is any stranger to....but I digress.
Ichorus
For starters, when the Garrison first started showing films it could guarantee a good audience. Now the novelty of having such a provision has worn off, audiences are much smaller, one might say they have even leveled off, giving us a good indication of the demand for such a provision in the Isles is. But of course, that is mere speculation. Do you not realise that alot of people will have just started getting fed up of attending an uncomfortable and generally lacking cinema. Its Like Cineworld vs Odeon. Cineworld is going strength to strength because it is enjoyable in everyway. Odeon is expensive and uncomfortable and dull. Mareel is Cineworld, Garrison is Odeon (god of popcorn) The facts are, based on the information available to the general public, is that no cinema or venue has managed to be a runaway commercial success in Shetland in over thirty years, why should we suddenly believe this plan will be? How long is it since Shetland/Lerwick had fully fledged designated Cinemaor Venue of similar capacity to North Star. I think people have learned from their mistakes, more facts and figure and market research is available to people nowadays. Let me ask, how busy was the old museum all year round? How many events and exhibitions did it used to have on in it old residence. The Museum is a great example of something not everyone thought was wise, but by Christ is it a testament to the hard work of the people behind it. Every time I'm home i want to go there. Just an example that i believe Mareel will follow suit of.Some will say a museum is needed... is it really? Is a music venue really needed?Dont all we need is food, water, shelter and means to acquire them. How much a boring uncelebrated life we would all live. Para Handy
^^ My vote would be to tag on a casino and maybe a strip joint, then the whole thing might just pay. After all, neither is anything the North Ness is any stranger to....but I digress. Well Ghostrider if they add the items you have add to the MAREEL and if it has a bar as well you wont get any of the councilors out of the place at all. and as for the councilors "Call against Trident"! Well speak about the pot calling the kettle black after all the money they have wasted in the past 20 years or more
WiiMan
Suppose we upgrade the Garrison, new cinema hardware, new projection booth before it falls down, new seats....works to the floor to accomodate those? Is that £1m? I presume Shetland Arts has a budget for all this remedial work? Gwillym Gibbons has given a firm commitment that the Garrison won't be 'run down' if we get Mareel........or are you suggesting that it's OK if it falls down on or is uncomfortable for theatre goers as long as it doesn't happen to cinema goers? And another thing, why have all the expensive state o' the art digital projection stuff when the vast majority of people attending the Garrison have no idea whether or not the film they just watched was digital or not?As an example: Picky cinema (Orkney) attendance figures 07/08 34,42506/07 30,55505/06 31,98704/05 32,52603/04 29,592 Picky might not be the best example to quote. The leisure centre is used approximately 25 times per annum on average by the population of Orkney. According to 'The Economist' magazine cinema usage in the UK has flattened out at 3 visits per year per person on average. I don't deny that given the geography and climate in Shetland 1.7 is probably a fair figure but I would imagine that Picky benefits greatly from parents being able to go to the gym while the kids go to the cinema in the same facility. I doubt that Mareel could benefit from the same synergy. I also doubt very much that Picky would have the same excessively expensive set-up that's proposed for Mareel. Anyone else care to get back on-topic?!
