ArabiaTerra
That's how a proper democracy works, paulb. If they get the votes, they get the seats.

Do you apply this to all parties or just the BNP? What about more socialist parties? What if I thought that Labour was a danger to this country because I disagreed so much with their plans - can I please not have them in because I don't like them? Of course not. paulb
of course we dont always get what we want. but could you trust the extreme groups to leave thing alone. if in some weard world they got into power the first thing to go would be our right to get rid of them. even mrs thatcher did not try that. JAStewart
If in some weird world they got into power the first thing to go would be our right to get rid of them Which is the exactly why the USA has the Right to Bear Arms. There is always going to be a proportion of the population who would react violently to Nick Griffin's jackbooted thugs marching people into extermination camps. JAStewart
Also, how do we decide which parties should and should not be allowed MP's? If we don't let the BNP in because they are 'fascist', couldn't we just find other parties which fall into the fascist or socialist labels and reject them? It has to be nearly all or nothing I'm afraid.
unlinkedstudent
^^ Very good point. Can we ban a party beginning with the letter "L" by any chance then or is it too late to undo the damage done?

hoosn
hot topic, but uk barely free nor democracy these days n yes they will ban folks freedom to vote for who they want to
JAStewart
hot topic, but uk barely free nor democracy these days Hm. Polity 4 and Freedom House would disagree. If you think Britain is bad you should try living in Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe or North Korea. In Britain we don't think we're free because, for example, Gordon Brown jumped into PM seat and we didn't vote him. Well imagine if all members of government were single party and were unelected. Believe me, we have it pretty bloody good considering how bad it can be.
hoosn
uk professes to be a key leader for the "free" world but are into every avenue of your existance even telling you what to eat and basically what to think , as opposed to those others who dont profess anything
JAStewart
They can tell you what to eat and think, and you can choose to do what you want. If you are disgruntled by the laws of this country why don't you stand for MP or MSP?
Roachmill
We may well be "free" compared to other parts of the planet, but does that then mean we should accept the slow erosion of said freedoms? No, of course not. Typically, those in power are there for their desire for power... just the kind of folk that shouldn't be put in charge in the first place! As to reasons for my not becoming a MP... I'd be rubbish for starters. Then again, if you love the laws of this country so much, or wish to erode them yet further, why don't you stand to protect / destroy them
