As a person driving in Scandanavia. I agree completely. :D

Driving on snow is safe. I never want to drive on gritted roads again, they're downright dangerous, and if a real risk assessment was done by the people who should know, they would quickly change the gritting policy.

I'm not sure it's an easy call. In grumpier moments, I wonder if the Council's target for main roads is to leave a minimum of one inch of slush over 50% of the road surface, for a least 24 hours after the last flake. In those moments, I note that achieving this when only half an inch of snow has actually fallen is challenging, but that they usually manage it. I mutter that, if we're going to have salted roads (and on the whole, if I was hoping for an ambulance, I might think that a good thing), it would be sensible to clear them as completely as in some other colder and snowier places.

In more reflective mood, I understand that there have to be compromises, bearing in mind that we have an extraordinary area of road surface for 22,000 people. I do think the Council does a better-than-average job on side roads. And the crews are heroes.

I'll just quote mesell fae a peerie bit back :

Remember salt is a very new thing here, it was only brought into use about 8-10 years ago.

The thing is, most of the time, with the winters we have now, the salt-grit is most effective as hoar frost and ice are much more common than accumulations of snow.

In pure grit times, if the temprature stayed below about -2, the grit just slid over the ice off the road and did little good, even if it did, you kept gritting all day for little gain. With salt, one run in the morning is enough to do it, and many people don;t even realise its been done. Likewise when the pre-salt keeps the morning frost at bay.

Yep, on snow it creates a slush at road level, but that also free's it up so the rubber blades can clean to the black tar, so when the snow clears, instead of having roads covered in ice and packed snow for up to a week later, its all clear.

Onybody wha minds whit it wis lik drivin on pure ice lik dat winna hae ony budder wi a grain o slush!

oh by da y.... i hoop we get sum right bloody snaa afore da winters by we.

I second dat! No at xmas or newerd'y so da gritty boys gets some time hom, but clear o dat, I long fur a fan alang da gavel I can mak a hoose fur da peerie lass in lik I used ta hae :)

^^ Sliding doon the same slope(s) over and over again wis fine while your age was in single figures, after that the lure of two wheels taking you places you'd never been, and everywhere much faster than two feet ever could was just too much.

After all, just how many different ways are there to sledge down the same braes, I can mind perfectly where every bump was in them all yet, never mind what like it was last year when I was 9 or 10. "Goldfish in a bowl" comes to mind.

So, I have a short attention span unless something really catches my interest, shoot me. :P

Onybody wha minds whit it wis lik drivin on pure ice lik dat winna hae ony budder wi a grain o slush!

I mind most be 25 years fae syne dat da gritters seemed tae git catched oot wi him freezin da fore side o nine. I cam tae da Brig o Fitch an hae tae aese up tae ging aroond him, only tae loss wye an come tae a standstill at da idder side. Efter oagin back as far as I could I made it on da second go, dan comin doon by Sutherlands at 10mph da only tae aese up was tae geng upon da herd shooder.

At da back o five ee night aboot da same time da rods seemed fine coming oot o Lerwick so I passed twaartree cars heading up da Nort Rod, denn I braikit as I wisna going tae manage by da hidmost car. My car geed sidewyes an I sledged by twartree cars lyin in da stank afore I got control ageen. Dat sam night someen wis killed on dat sam stretch o rod.

A'll pit up wi a grain o slush raeder is go back tae yon condeetions!
