    Oh, they will.

For years they'll blame previous decisions by the Westminster government for all their troubles or as an excuse as to why they can't do something about any given situation..

Stand by for lots of "It wasnae us"........

A brave stance, I would not be surprised to see Tesco appeal this if it were based on a feeling rather than a planning matter as laid down by the Gov. There is grounds that this could oppose one of the planning policies by not encouraging better use of the district centre. Planners have been busy rewriting policies due to an extraordinary delay in updating to suit the needs of communities.
I wonder if visits to Lerwick or other shopping areas have reduced due to the delivery service.

    'Nationalise' the fishing fleet?

Yup, sound like good old fashioned 1970's leftism rearing its ugly head again. Let private industry do all the graft, then kick their office door down and take their money to help keep afloat an idealistic ship of fools.

And I thought all the political dinosaurs had died out.

Unlike Caithness (which was part of the original deal with Shetland and Orkney), where virtually all the place names are Norse and yet they find themselves being increasingly targetted by the Gaelic McNazis who wish to tartanise the whole of Scotchland.

Had we attempted an alliance several hundred years ago it might have worked, but them and us have taken two very different roads for far too long, for a shared heritage that began to die 700 odds years ago on their part to still make a tangible connection.

They became Scottish over 200 year before we were forced to, by mutual agreement, and apparently whatever distaste may or may not have existed among the plebs about it at the time, they got over and have by most appearances embraced their 'Scottishness' now for a very long time. Or thats the attitude I've found to prevail among the Western Islanders who've crossed my path. We, on the other hand were dragged in to Scotland for no other reason than the shenanigans ensuing following the bed-hopping antics of some old Edinburgh toff with similar from Copenhagen, we have resented it, and resisted the attempts to be 'Scottified' ever since.

In a more present context, we rapidly shook off the shackles of the church dictating the rules for just about every aspect of our society a hundred or so years ago, they went in the opposite direction with their 'wee frees', who still call the shots there with many things even in the present.

Like I said, we have common ground as islanders, but really nothing else with meaningful note to the present and future. I just can't see 'island living' in an off itself as anything to base an alliance on, when our attitude and culture are now so far apart.

Fair comment, you need checks and balances right across the political spectrum. The complete absence of one sector of the political scene is something that is definitely Not Good. The far right and left both have a part to play - even if it is only to make the more moderate parties pay attention a little more keenly......
For example I think George Galloway is a complete ass, but he says what he thinks and doesn't give a monkeys about any criticism he may get. We need more politicians with gonads like that instead of 'toe the party line' career politicians.

Personally, I'd like to see Holyrood completely full of independent MP's with not one of the 'old' parties getting a sniff. Ain't gonna happen, though.

SP, wanting to keep hard left idiots away from power does not imply that it is a 'right wing'  ploy.

There are plenty of Lib Dem and more centrally minded folk out there, we just need to watch out for the SNP pandering to the dyed-in-the-wool Scotch left who were the core support for the SNP in the early days.

GR is right with his comment, there's a lot of brainwashed sheep in the Scotch sooth who cannot think for themselves and whose default setting for voting is "what their fathers done before". Not the way forward for a positive Scotland, the last thing we'd need is political system two party dinosaurs roaming the Holyrood landscape.

The Kirkwall store seems(?) to be of a similar size but, I'm no expert on the yardage bit.
Plenty of room adjoining the Lerwick store for development.  There is a large pach of waste ground adjoining the store/car park and, there is the car park itself which, incidentally, is much larger than the Kirkwall one.

^ In the same vein, I've been trying to figure out how a shop "nobody goes to" comes to have a worn out carpark, and one that's "always busy" has a perfect? one.

Maybe the potholes really were originally Tesco's ones, and they had them shifted in the middle of the night to nobble the competition.

Combining this thread and the complaints about speeding at Tesco, maybe Tesco should buy the holes from the Co-op and install them in their own car park - giving the Co-op a smooth car park and slowing the cars at Tesco. Sorted!

The difference, Kavi, is that Queen Sonja is royalty visiting from a relatively minor foreign state and - like it or not - Cameron is the Prime Minister of this country and therefore of more interest to the majority of people in the UK.

And, like it or not, we are part of the UK.

You'll get no argument from me for posting that, but the Petrofac guys seem to cop for a lot of blame when it comes to acting like a bunch of Richard Heads in Lerwick and when on the ferry. I'd say the percentage of troublemakers amongst them is well down when compared to the percentage of home-grown clowns that are roaming around. But.......

If you put a large amount of guys into a small 'recreational area', then there's going to be a noticeable rise in incidents, friction with locals and each other etc. But it could be worse, you could have a couple of warships disgorging matelots ashore after a few weeks on exercise....

TBH, I've been on the ferry more than a few times and had to tolerate drunken tools from Shetland or Orkney hacking folk off. They're the same retards who get pished in airports when going on holiday, at least with Petrofac there'll be some backlash for the troublemakers if they step over the line.

Petrofac are pretty ruthless if they have enough evidence to go on. Some of the clown element started kicking off up at Saxa Vord a while back. There were a few vacancies the next day....

Party time is, Party Time wherever you go.

Also, I was on the boat a few fridays back and, I didn't notice anything untoward except that the queues for the bar and cafeteria were enormous.

I also read that one of these workers (unverified) offered a lady £200 for sex.  Last guy that did that was local and, he offered (I think) £2000.  Was a genuine offense caused or, were they just haggling over the price.... (my smileys ain't working)
