momo
Someone from work just back from a holiday in America brought us back some mini Hersheys bars. OMG, the Marmite of the chocolate world! Vile.....how do they get that awful after taste in it? MJ
my daughter loves american chocolate, she describes it of tasting of "soap" - yes she's a bit odd.Believe part of it is to stop the "bloom" when going through temperature changes. But now you can see why folks were so worried when Kraft took over cadburys. momo
Still got the after taste now...licking an armpit would taste better. If that was the only chocolate you could get I would never eat the stuff again.

crofter-amy
This must be why America has so few different kinds of chocolate bar compaired to us.
JordanKZ
I'm fairly sure that a lot of American chocolate companies such as Hershey use off milk in their products rather than fresh milk. Giving it a pretty bad taste.
momo
Now you say it off milk is how I would describe the after taste, ugh. Traumatised, will be put off chocolate for a whole......um, well, couple of hours anyway.

MuckleJoannie
I seem to mind reading somewhere that American chocolate tasted different because due to the sparse population in rural areas fresh milk was hard to get so more sugar was added to disguise the sour taste. Frances144
American chocolate is filthy stuff. Tastes like dog chocolate (don't ask ) - Good Boys. Russian chocolate is worse.
shetlandpeat
M&Ms are American type chocolate. To get the candy taste they add "Flovour C". It serves no purpose but to alter the texture and taste. From what I remember, we were not allowed to dispose of it with normal rubbish, it was dumped at sea, and it passes right through ya. George.
Why, oh why does anyone even consider eating the rip-off that the Americans sell as chocolate?
Russabell
I seem to remember reading somewhere that in the UK, chocolate has to have X% of cocoa solids in it before it can be classified as chocolate (can't remember the figure). However in the US it is a lower percentage (or maybe there is no such ruling?), so their chocolate has less cocoa solids in it (and therefore, IMHO, tastes disgusting).
