The squad trips to New York were paid for by the squad members themselves. The first trip came about as the Jarl had always wanted to march through NY with his squad. If I had spent as much on my suit as any jarls squad does I would go to anywhere in the world I could,to get a chance to use it.
Nobody can say how much good publicity comes out of such trips for Shetland.

Not wanting to spoil a half decent opportunity for a good argument but, I'll have a go anyhow...

Let them have their fun...   This time of year, the Jarl Squad are "yesterdays men" anyhow.

However,  if the good people of Lerwick were to get their act together then, there would be some kind of "proper" New Year celebration here and, maybe the Jarl Squad would be unable to attend Edinburgh due to "prior commitments".
    Just a thought....

Never did understand the New York bit myself..  Maybe it's because just about everything to do with the place seems to be "fake".  Might as well throw a few "Hollywood Vikings" into the mix....

The Lerwick Harbour make sure they collect their Dues.  If the users of the Toft pier had paid their dues for landings, then it might have been viable for the SIC to repair or replace it.

There would presumably still have ferries for Fetlar, Skerries. Papa Stour, Foula and Fair Isle, so there would probably be some back-up/ contingency.  anyway.

It isn't any more common in Shetland than anywhere else. We just know everybody here so it seems like it. The CRUK say that 1 in 3 people will get cancer that would be nearly 7000 of the Shetland population. The good thing is more and more are being cured.

Sorry, but there really is no question that the leave campaign was highly misleading. I've personally spoken to several people here in Shetland that regret their decision now that they are "better informed".

Editorials in publications like The Economist (hardly a "lefty" paper) warn that the impact of this ill-conceived referendum and our inevitable  exit from the EU on the world's financial markets will be considerable and far-reaching.

Anecdotal evidence of a rise in hate crime has already been backed up by data from the police. The National Police Chiefs’ Council said that reports of hate crime to an official website increased 57 per cent on Thursday-Sunday compared with the same period four weeks earlier.

Meanwhile,  the vanguard of the 'Brexiteers' Farage & Borris have all scattered, like cockroaches under torchlight, back to their toff's dinner parties with the like of Murdoch, or their £250,000 columns in right wing broadsheets.

But what do we expect from the likes of Farage? A man who's old school master warned of his extreme fascist and racist views in a letter to his headmaster back in '81,

A guy who 'marched through a quiet Sussex town singing Hitler Youth songs'. Even his own party colleague was shocked when, on the topic of enlisting ex National Front candidates to run said "'There's no need to worry about the ###### vote. The nig-nogs will never vote for us.".

And what are we left with? A torn, divided country, that to the dismay of the  international community, seems inexplicably determined to turn Great Britain into Little England.

And the response from the leave voters? "Oh stop moaning! Get over it! You've lost! Democracy has spoken! It'll not be that bad!"

Well, we shall see. We shall see when the redundancies start to mount, the house prices increase, the NHS is gradually privatised and an economy that relies on the EU for the lion's share of its trade takes the hit from not being able to deal with its closest trading partners on a level playing field.

Almost every expert agrees that this was a terrible move. But I forgot, you're sick of hearing from "experts", eh? Far better to base your vote on Sun editorials, racist billboards and some absurd longing for a bygone Britain that never was.

Seem to be thinking a lot about Shetland these days. Don't know if it is just me getting older. Was thinking about Lerwick in the mid 80's and being scared walking through the town center where all the punks used to hang out on good days Lol. Suppose they were harmful enough, funny though that the punk fashions probably lingered on longer in Shetland than anywhere else.

    Are they still there?

Haha seriously though, I miss the place.

I remember tramping over the hills on the long summer days and lying back in the heather that was in full bloom and soaking up the Suns warmth.

Is the place I grew up and I yearn to go back some day. Funny that as when I was older (and living in Shetland)I was desperate to leave.

^ He very probably is right, up to a point at least. However, standing against that is "use and wint", in that we've "accepted" their jurisdiction for over 500 years "without resistance", which in itself opens up other arguments: Did we have any viable avenue of "resistance" open to us etc.

There's virtually no doubt Scotland envoked a not insubstantial amount of jiggery pokery to hold on to us in the first place over which we had no say, muddied in future generations of the involved Monarchys that both were arguably equally as "Danish" as the other. But while its virtually certain "wrongs" were done to us back then, you cannot just roll back the last 500 years and everything that's hppened in them and start over.

Its a can of worms that if opened and dealt with in a civilised manner could only generate years if not decades of haggling, at the end of which neither side would probably be very happy, but were lumbered with a compromise they realised they'd have to live with as it was the best they could reasonbly expect in the circumstances. So, its no surprise those on top of the pile will do everything they can to keep the lid on the tin for as long as they possibly can. if this is the way to go, what is needed to something to grab the tin, rip off its lid and send it and its contents flying to the four winds. Hill is not that something, his efforts to date are no more than a peerie dog giving them an occsional twig at their breek leg while they clasp the tin tight to their bosom in their sweaty paws.

That said, without a democratically obtained mandate from the Shetland electorate the whole thing remains academic. At the moment Hill is just a lone renegade, and Big Brother tends not to acknowledge or negotiate with lone dissent beyond the bare minimum. Perhaps had he expended his energies elicting the support of the people first to take things in the direction they want and not where he thinks they should go, rather than on futile publicity stunts and contrived Court cases going nowhere, some progress might have been possible by now. But instead all he's achieved is to earn himself  reputation that mkes him an embarrassment and detrimental to anything he puts his name to.

"If at first you don't succeed, give up before you make a damn fool of yourself" is obviously completely lost on him.

The gritters start at 5.30 and 6.00 am, the grit only really starts to work when the traffic gets among it. And hour earlier wouldn't make a difference. I drive to town many times in the middle of the night with bad roads but if you have the proper tyres and take your time you never have a problem. Unless there is a lot of snow and drifting then you should stay at home.

If you can't find a fire festival to fit in with school holidays, you could always try visiting in summer and going along to one of the carnivals. Unstfest is a very popular event in Unst with all sorts of activities for those of all ages (so something to do for both your 11- and 20-year-old). There's also a carnival procession that, whilst not torchlit due to the summer daylight, is attended by several Jarl squads in full regalia.

That takes place  16th-24th July next year. At roughly the same time (a little earlier perhaps) there is the Scalloway Gala, which is another weekend of various activities and a carnival procession. They've occasionally carried torches at the procession for that but again it is in fairly broad daylight due to the time of year.

Other carnivals take place throughout the isles in summer, so whilst you'd not be getting the authentic UHA experience, it's maybe a better holiday on balance, as coming in January/February limits options for other activities (especially anything outdoors).

Peter, I despair when I read comments like yours. Give them a chance to become involved, show them they have a chance to change things. Look how messed up things are with the older generation continuing to vote with old ideals.
It'll never be 'Like it used to be back when..'.

Complete guff. Throwing around terms like "kangaroo court" shows how utterly blinded some are on this issue. We had top judicial authorities decide whether or not there was a legitimate grievance to be heard, and they were clear in stating there was, under longstanding laws relating to Representation of the People. You need to set aside the fact you disagree with it and understand that - whether he is found 'guilty' or not - those pursuing the claim were doing so via legitimate legal means. That is not a "witch hunt" in my eyes and I find it childish to suggest otherwise.

The fact is Faroe got a massive increase in Mackerel quota to the deterement of the Scottish quota because they said the mackerel had increased in the Faroese waters, so what the hell are they doing over here. If the Shetland boats were fishing illegaly in Faroe you can be sure the fishery officers would be aboard them.

The de-humanisation and demonisation of refugees will repulse most people.
If dead babies started getting washed up on Mael beach or St Ninians isle, does anyone have any doubt that the vast majority of Shetlanders would do everything in their power to help?
If a family scarred from the horrors of war found refuge in Shetland, would most Shetlanders not make them feel as welcome as possible?
They would in the Shetland I know.

Come to the Shetland Islands and experience the warm community spirit and a friendly welcome.
I will make any refugees who end up making a home here feel as welcome as I possibly can.
My guess is most Shetlanders will do the same.
