Paul the state still has an obligation to house its people when did we get to the stage where we encouraged young people to borrow 100K just to have a roof over their head for gods sake. I was tought to live within my means save for the future is that not what those who are in power now are saying yet there is no affordable housing to enable them to do exactly that.

That's perfectly fine, as is the opposing opinion that our Lib Dem chum won the election using nefarious methods and should be held to account and judged by the people of Shetland and Orkney in a by-election.

I have to agree with the opinion about the banner "we the people of Shetland." it is an act of arrogance to assume they speak for all Shetlanders.
Similarly it is an act of arrogance to assume that the majority of Shetlanders are happy with their MP being all over the national and local media for using dirty tricks, smears and lies during an election campaign and only admitting his guilt after he had been re-elected.
Are the Lib Dem supporters even a little uncomfortable or embarrased about their man using these tactics for personal and party gain? Who knows, as others have said the majority of people keep their opinions to themselves.

The civil servant report that was leaked was a third party account of a discussion which in Scots Law is hearsay. As there appears to be confusion about this term please feel free to read the attached educational link on the subject.

Alistair Carmichael, first party confession, has admitted his guilty in this case in respect of not stoping his special advisor breaching the official secrets act and releasing an official UK Government document and then not being honest about his role in the leak to the media following questioning by channel 4 and others. Link in above posts in respect of Radio Orkney interview explaining in his own words his rationale.

As Paulb said - do you really need to bring the dog with you on a visit? The kennels on the ferry are VERY basic, I wouldn't put mine in them. You can't bring your dog into the cabins or even into the passenger area at all.
Bear in mind it is an overnight crossing and if it is a rough night it will not be very good for the dog and you'll be severely restricting your accommodation options at this end if you have a dog with you.

The only other ferry option with a dog is to bring your own car and leave the dog in the car. There's no access to car decks at all during the crossing so you may have to speak to the vet about sedating the dog as it is bloody noisy when they load the wagons on and off (they're chained down - you' wouldn't believe the racket), especially for the poor dog if your crossing involves a stop at Kirkwall to take on more traffic.

I'd leave mine in kennels down South whilst checking the place out, that way Fido will only have to endure one trip if you decide to move. Much less stressful.

Having said that, I hope you visit, Shetland is a lovely place to live, but - again - have a Summer holiday up here to look round by all means. But make sure you come back in the winter when the wind is screaming and it's bloody dark. If you still like it then, you'll be fine.

Not sure what all this ethinicity of people is relevant as to why you trust or not someone. Trust is not based on ethinicity, genderor, religion or colour of shoes the individual wears.

However for those that are interested in the predominate ethnicity in Shetland is predominately Nordic or Scottish will have their answer when the Viking study project produces its report soon.

Their study in Orkney based upon the volunteers to the project found strongly in favour of Scots.

Complaints are common that SIC are Lerwick biased, Holyrood is Glasgow biased, and Westminister is London biased whilst the reality is that in some issues they certainly are and some they are not and you cannot satisfy everyone all the time.

Unanimity on who the best candidate or party to vote for will not be reached here. So best to vote for who you think best matches your principle or believes rather than opting out of voting.

Please use your vote wisely and don't put Shetland, or Scotland, at risk. Westminster, controlled primarily by the English, will continue to leach off the back of those around them. If given the chance again, they will continue to gain more wealth and more control, as we get weaker and poorer.

They won't even have the decency to say "Thank you."

and lets remember a vow libs/lab/cons made. another apt song

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. I heard my country calling, away across the sea, Across the waste of waters, she calls and calls to me. Her sword is girded at her side, her helmet on her head,[6] And around her feet are lying the dying and the dead; I hear the noise of battle, the thunder of her guns; I haste to thee, my mother, a son among thy sons. And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.   and what a silly comment we are a scottish island off the scottish coast it was settled by scots first try to not forget it.

Ah yes, "Champagne socialism". What a horrible term that one is. Campaign for equality when you're from a wealthy background and you must be a hypocrite. Campaign for equality when you're from a non-wealthy background and, well, you must just be jealous.

Danus Skene's personal background is not of significant relevance to his politics. His previous candidacies and his charity work were not, as dishonestly claimed above, kept secret - they have been reported widely by both Shetland Times and Shetland News and Danus Skene has spoken of them publicly. So he was educated at Eton... So what? So he is religious... So what?

If you expect any SNP voter to be swung by such nasty personal politics I suspect you're a little out of the loop.

Wasn't it ground rent/feudal as opposed to rent on the actual building?  Surely, therefore, the building is a separate entity?  Now couldn't that have been rented out to another party?

    Hi paulb,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

Prior to the new partnership with CLAN, our one-to-one service was on hold till funds could be secured.
As the new partnership is with CLAN, the limited service (which is open to anyone living with cancer including family, carers and friends, during and beyond treatment) we provide will be available to those affected by Cancer as it is in partnership with a cancer support Charity.
You can read more about CLAN and the amazing work they do here:  http://clanhouse.org

At this moment in time we are working very hard to get funds secured to have our one-to-one service fully operational which will be open to all those suffering bereavement.
We fully appreciate everyones support and patience at this time.

Anyone can support our service with a simple donation of £1 by texting sbss14£1 to 70070 or by making a donation on our JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/sbss/

Again, we would like to express our gratitude to all those who have donated, each donation will contribute towards getting our one-to-one service fully operational again. Thank you!

I don't think that question is entirely relevant.

As stated on their web page, "COPE Ltd is a charity and social enterprise which provides employment and employment skill development for adults with disabilities".

The "people/participants" you refer to are the whole point of COPE's existence.

I would not be surprised in the slightest if COPE's businesses cost more to run - and make less profit - than similar ventures run on purely commercial terms. The reason? It's because they are NOT operating on purely commercial terms. Their remit is greater than that. That's why they are a charity. That's why they operate as a social enterprise. That's why they need public funding to make it all work.

You can't just subtract items from their existing costs to produce figures showing what things would be like without the participants. If the participants were not involved, everything would be different, and all costs would change. But the bigger point is that, without the participants, the businesses would almost certainly not exist at all.
In the grand scheme of things, COPE doesn't get very much public funding at all. And, from what I can see, they make excellent use of what they do get.

Might there be room for further improvement? Of course. But there is room for improvement in every single organisation, everywhere. The key is to continually strive for better. It looks to me like COPE is making excellent progress on various fronts, and good on them.

Aye, but, raising it on Shetlink gives the opportunity to find out if anyone reading Shetlink does know anything more and are willing to say so, or whether everyone is equally in the dark. It also gives a ballpark indication whether its an issue of reasonably widespread concern, or just of one or two folk.

Trouble with asking questions of COPE directly, a fragmented approach by individuals is easily ignored or fobbed off with so much waffle, if they were of mind to play it that way. A larger number all at once are more likely to make better progress. Its also questionable if any of the "on site" paid staff have a remit that obliges them to respond to public questions regarding management policy and decisions anyway. Such things are usually the forte of the office bearers of the organisation, and it needs to be established what the managing organisation is and who the post holders within it are before that avenue can be pursued, which again is where Shetlink can be helpful in pooling available knowledge of those willing to give it.

If I remember correctly when the new managment team steamed into COPE, they immediately made numerous of the adults with special needs redundant, which at that time caused a lot of upset.

If it is the case, that they have recieved this grant to enable some of these people to get back to wor k and have not done so, they should hang their heads in shame!

sounds fine. would have been better if you had said you were involved with cope. well done if you are. no one has picked on cope. 2 issues were raised not by me by the way.
    1. pricing. you have dealt with it.
    2. coffee shop now closed. ive no problem with cope competing with normal shops. why not do a proper restaurant. a number of prisons are opening clink restaurants. no one moans about near free labour and free business rates.
PLEASE TRY TO READ what folks are trying to say. everyone wants cope to be a massive success. they want your scrap store to be a success. not everyone can afford new. so carry on.
please keep us up dated on your plans for cope. we would love to know
